chapter one

Celeste stirred awake, her body heavy with reluctance as she groaned softly into her pillow. The morning light spilled through her curtains, but she could hardly muster the energy to open her eyes. The thought of school felt like an insurmountable weight pressing down on her chest. She knew she had to get up, but the cozy warmth of her bed was far too inviting. As she lay there, tangled in her sheets, her mind wandered to the strange word that had been haunting her since last week: WOLF. What did it mean?  The word lingered in her thoughts like a shadow, an unanswered question that gnawed at her curiosity. But now, it was gone, and the realization that whatever was meant to happen had likely already passed sent a chill down her spine. With a sigh, she reluctantly pushed herself out of bed, the chill of the floor jolting her awake.

Dragging her feet into the bathroom connected to her room, she turned on the faucet and splashed her face with cold water, trying to shake off the lingering fog of sleep. With her toothbrush in hand, she brushed her teeth, staring at her reflection in the mirror as she pondered the meaning of that elusive word. It seemed to taunt her, its mystery unresolved. Once she felt somewhat refreshed, she turned her attention to her wardrobe. She rifled through her clothes, finally deciding on a combination that was both stylish and practical: a pair of sleek black knee-high boots paired with dark pantyhose, a denim skirt she had bought just last week with her best friend Lydia, and a fitted black long-sleeve shirt. It was chilly outside, so she grabbed her favorite coat, knowing she would need it if she wanted to avoid freezing on her way to school.

After getting dressed, Celeste stood in front of her mirror, applying just the right amount of makeup to enhance her features. She took a deep breath, mentally preparing herself for the day ahead. The thought of facing her classmates sent a small shiver down her spine, but she quickly brushed it aside. Grabbing her school bag, she stuffed a few notebooks inside, readying herself for the day's lessons. As she headed down the stairs, the scent of her mother's tea wafted through the air, a comforting reminder of home. When she reached the kitchen, she found her mom, Cecilia Harrow, standing by the counter, sipping her tea with a contented smile.

"Good morning, sweetheart!" her mom greeted cheerfully, her eyes lighting up at the sight of Celeste. She walked over and kissed her daughter gently on the forehead. "Ready for another day?"
