chapter seventeen
Beneath the nearly full moon, the woods of Beacon Hills lay in eerie stillness, the stark, winter-bare branches silhouetted against the night sky. It was a peculiar quiet, one that made the air feel heavy and charged, as if the very world held its breath. But that silence shattered in an instant when a group of deer burst from the darkness, hooves pounding against the ground, leaves rising in a cloud of dust as they fled in panic. Their flight revealed a dark figure trailing behind them, moving with an unnatural speed that sent shivers down the spine of anyone who might witness it.
The figure charged out of the woods and into the shadowy streets, racing through the night with a sense of urgency. It darted down dark, puddle-strewn alleys in the town's industrial sector, the echo of its footsteps mingling with the distant sounds of the city. A barking dog, tethered in a suburban backyard, erupted into a frenzy, straining against its chain, as if sensing the impending collision of forces. It dashed toward the street, ready to face the oncoming traffic, but before it could reach the road, the dark figure made a sudden move.
With a single footfall, it landed on the roof of a truck, the sound barely registering in the night. Time seemed to slow as the figure launched into the moonlight, defying gravity for a heartbeat before crashing back to earth. As the light illuminated him, the truth became clear: it was Scott McCall. A werewolf, but in that moment, not entirely transformed. He moved with raw, primal energy, his bare hands pounding against the ground as he loped forward, seemingly racing for his life.
But in a heartbeat, as Scott pushed off the ground, his senses flared, and he blinked. In a brilliant white flash, he found himself somewhere entirely different, somewhere alive with daylight. He was standing there, captured in a moment of tenderness, kissing Allison Argent. The memory surged through him, vivid and consuming, as their lips moved from each other's mouths to the warm skin of her neck, a moment frozen in time.
Just as quickly as it had come, the vision faded. Scott's feet hit the ground once more, yanking him back to the present. The shadows of Beacon Hills enveloped him, and with another blink, he was hurled into the past again. The contrasts of those moments haunted him, pulling at the edges of his mind as he raced through the night, heart pounding in rhythm with the memories that refused to let go. The weight of loss and longing pressed heavily on his chest as he navigated the darkness, desperate to escape whatever shadows pursued him.
