chapter  seven

Allison stepped into the bustling hallways of Beacon Hills High School, the familiar cacophony of laughter and chatter enveloping her like a warm embrace. As she made her way to her locker, a sense of nervous excitement bubbled within her. Today was her birthday—a fact she hadn't exactly advertised. She approached her locker, twisting the combination with deft fingers. As the door swung open, a flurry of colorful balloons burst forth, floating aimlessly into the air, a cheerful birthday card attached to the bunch.

Caught off guard, Allison's eyes widened in surprise. Just then, Scott rounded the corner, his expression shifting from confusion to delight as he took in the sight. "It's your birthday?" he exclaimed, the excitement in his voice evident. Before she could process it, she instinctively tried to push the balloons back into the confines of her locker, an effort fueled by her desire to keep this day low-key.

"No. I mean, yes," she stammered, flustered by the sudden attention. "But don't tell anyone. I don't even know how Lydia and Celeste found out." The last thing she wanted was for the entire school to celebrate her turning seventeen with a grand spectacle.

Scott raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on his lips. "Why didn't you tell me?" he pressed, stepping closer, his curiosity evident.

With a sigh, she leaned against the locker. "I don't want a lot of people to know. Since I'm seventeen." The admission hung in the air, heavy with the weight of her insecurities.

Scott blinked in surprise. "You're seventeen?"

"Yeah," she replied, rolling her eyes, but unable to hide the hint of a smile tugging at her lips. "And that's the reaction I'm trying to avoid."

"Why? I get it. You had to repeat a year because of all the moving around, right?" He stepped forward, a comforting presence amidst the whirlwind of teenage drama.

With a resigned smile, she closed her locker door, the balloons bobbing softly against the metal surface. "Exactly," she said before leaning in to kiss him softly on the lips, surprising them both with the sudden sweetness of the moment.

"What was that for?" Scott asked, slightly taken aback, yet clearly pleased.

"For literally being the first person to ever make the correct assumption," she replied, a hint of mischief dancing in her eyes. "Everyone else says, 'What? Were you held back? Are you stupid? Did you take the short bus?'"
