Chapter 12: Caught in the Act

It had been a long, tense day of hiding his wings, and Keeho felt the strain every time he moved. By the time lunch rolled around, he couldn't take it any longer. Sneaking into an empty bathroom, he checked to make sure the coast was clear, then stretched his wings out, finally allowing them to breathe.

The relief was instant. He took a deep breath, the cool air flowing around the feathers, bringing comfort to his stiff back. He closed his eyes, momentarily lost in the sensation.

But the peace was short-lived.

The door creaked open, and Keeho's eyes flew open, meeting a very shocked Soul standing in the doorway.

In a split second, Keeho yanked his wings back and slammed the door shut, breathing hard. Panic flared up as he desperately tried to come up with an excuse.

"What... what was that?" Soul asked, his voice muffled through the door but thick with curiosity.

Keeho's mind raced. He needed an excuse, fast. His cheeks burning, he finally blurted out, "Uh... I was, um, cosplaying! You know... as a fairy."

There was a long pause from the other side, and Keeho wished the ground would swallow him up.

"A fairy?" Soul's voice sounded like he was trying to hold back laughter.

"Yes!" Keeho practically yelled, doubling down out of sheer embarrassment. "I just... I thought it'd be funny. You know, Halloween is coming up... practice and all that."

The silence lingered a beat too long, and Keeho felt his face growing warmer by the second. Finally, Soul let out a soft laugh, which quickly turned into an uncontrollable giggle. Keeho groaned inwardly, knowing his face must be beet red by now.

"Alright, Keeho... a fairy," Soul said between laughs. "Can I at least see your costume later?"

Keeho sighed, forcing himself to laugh along. "Uh, yeah... maybe someday," he replied, heart pounding.

As Soul left, Keeho leaned back against the sink, trying to calm himself. He knew he'd narrowly escaped discovery, but with every excuse, he was only digging himself deeper into this lie.

And somewhere deep down, he wondered if Soul would ever understand the truth—or if Keeho even wanted him to.
