chapter 22: lies

Ace's pov:

I was expecting Gavi today, here, and I have a bad feeling about having him over my house again. If he ever gets to know about Ashley, things could end in a disastrous way

Ashley would hate me, she would hate herself.

"Sir Mr Lorenzo has arrived", Marie said
I nodded as I went towards the door to open it

"Mr Lorenzo", I said, gesturing my hand over for a handshake
"Mr Leone", he said, firmly shaking my hand
"Come on in", I said, as we walked towards my office

Earlier, I had told Marie to keep Ashley busy in her bedroom, the last thing I wanted was for Lorenzo and Ashley to meet again.

"Where is the girl?", Gavi suddenly asked, as we walked in my office
"She is at school", I said
"No the older girl, what's her name? Alicia, Akia..."
"Ashley", I interrupted
"Yes, Ashley", Gavi said, grinning widely as if he is the one who guessed the name right
"She has went shopping", I lied
"Are you guys dating?",he asked, and I could sense that he was not asking for genuine reasons
"The stock has been kept under control, but we have new enemies in Italy. The Lombroso's seem to be slowly taking over our positions", I said, trying to make avoid his question
The lesser we talk about Ashley, the lesser he gets to know her

"I thought we had Italy under control",he said, raising one eyebrow
"I thought so too, but we were wrong", I said
"Then how do we take care of it?",he asked
"For now we do nothing, let them think that they have their hands on the steering wheel, and once they least expect it, we snatch the steering wheel from them", I said, pouring skotch into two glasses.
"Toast to that", he said, raising the glass up

He quickly drank the skotch up, and required for a bathroom.

"Turn left, you will surely see it",I said

Lorenzo has been out for a while now, I have to check up on him
I went out my office, and immediately as I walked through the lounge, I saw Lorenzo and Ashley laughing together.
Fuck!

"There he is", Gavi said, pointing at me, "-thought you said, Ashley went shopping",he added, now with a serious face and serious tone. I could tell that he knew I was keeping something from him.

I am powerful yes, but Gavi has connections, and a person with connections should never be underestimated. Gavi has been in the mafia for far too long, meaning that he has experience, with just assumptions and suspecting, he could get information in less than 24 hours

"Uhmm...", I was about to say something but Ashley went ahead and cutted in.
"Yes I did go shopping, I just came back", she said
She is lying, why is she lying?
"Really? So where are the bags?",Gavi asked, his eyes wandering around, looking for the shopping bags
"Well what's inside the shopping bags can only be seen by Ace, if you get what I'm trying to say", she said, with a smirk

Gavi's face was straight serious for a while, until he gave a quick chuckle.
"Hmm I see, I will go now", he said
"I will walk you out", I said

I walked him out to his car, but Gavi stopped midway before getting in his car
"You know, Ashley has cute eyes", he said. It was as if he was studying my facial reaction, but I managed to keep a straight, calm face
"You think?", I asked, letting out a soft chuckle. The last thing I wanted was for him to see me worry
"Yeah, it's as if I've seen them somewhere. She just resembles..."
"Mr Lorenzo, you should get going now, or else traffic will catch up with you", I said, cutting him short
"Right", he said, speculating my face once again, before getting in the car

As soon as Gavi left, Cruise parked his car.
"Who was that?", he asked as he got out of the car
"Gavi", I replied nonchalantly
"Gavi as in Gavi Lorenzo?", he asked in disbelief
"Yes", I replied
"Are you crazy Ace? Did you forget that Ashley also lives here?", Cruise asked, all that calm expression that was on his face before, had vanished
"I know. I fuckin' know. But what could I do?",I asked, slowly losing my patience
"Oh I don't know. How about not bring him here"
"Really? You out of all people know how the mafia works, you know how Gavi Lorenzo works. He was already suspecting something about Ashley, if I had kept him away from her, he would have gone out his way to make sure that he gets all the information about her", I said, trying to lower my voice so that no one inside the house could hear us, "-I have this under control", I added
"You have this under control? Are you fuckin' kidding me? You will lead Ashley to her death Ace. Like you said, you know how Gavi Lorenzo works. Do you think he will spare her life, once she knows who she is?", Cruise yelled, storming his way into the house.

I followed shortly after him, and once I stepped inside the house, I saw Ashley standing there, her arms folded, and she was serious. Ohh boy

"Can we talk about this tomorrow", I pleaded nonchalantly, trying to avoid an argument
"Tomorrow? After I've finished shopping, huh Ace?", she asked, knowing that's not the case
"Please", I said, walking over to my office
But she blocked me with her arm, "Don't please me. Why did you lie to him?", she asked, with her eyebrows slowing combining
"Let it go!", I exclaimed warningly.
She scoffs, "you are embarrassed of me", she said, running upstairs.
I didn't call out to her to stop her.

Of course I was not embarrassed of her, but there's no way I could tell her that, because if I do, I will be compelled to tell her the real reason, and that's something I cannot do.
I would rather let her be angry at me due to stupid assumptions.

"Why are you doing this to her? This girl lied for you. She could have easily kept quiet and see you fail to answer Lorenzo's question, but no, she actually stepped in for you. She did that all for you, and yet you can't even give her a proper answer. All you manage to do is hurt her, everytime", Marie said, with a glim of tears striking in her eyes. She didn't wait for me to respond, she just left.

Although being my helper, she still advices me, and she has never given me a bad advice. And even today she is right, all I do is hurt Ashley, that seems to be my talent. A talent which I wish would go away.
