The basketball Class of 2020 has emerged as a remarkable crop of future stars, producing some of the most promising athletes in both the men's and women's games. Among these young stars, two players have captured the attention of basketball fans and analysts alike: Paige Bueckers and Rudy Bryant.
Bueckers, a standout from Hopkins High School in Minnesota, and Bryant, the eldest daughter of the legendary NBA player Kobe Bryant, and a player for Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles. The pair have collectively achieved an impressive total of seven state championships—four for Rudy and three for Paige. Putting up impressive stats, and all but carrying their team to victory and making the players around them better.
Bueckers and Bryant possess a unique combination of natural skill, basketball IQ, and court vision that is rare for players of their age. Though some would argue Bryant is better, with a higher number of points, assists, rebounds, blocks, and turnovers per game across the four years they played high school basketball. But both are exceptional players in their own right, deemed to be the next big stars in women's basketball.
Their exceptional abilities have led to their rankings as the top two players in the country, with Rudy holding the coveted #1 spot and Paige following closely behind at #2. With the two new graduates looking to take a step into the world of collegiate basketball, it is no surprise that the two had offers out the door. But both of them decided to commit to a college with no shortage of history when it comes to good basketball. The prestigious University of Connecticut (Uconn) has welcomed both players to its program for the upcoming college season, a move that has sparked excitement among fans and analysts alike.
However, the pairing of two highly talented players are both accustomed to being the stars of their respective teams. Raising concerns about potential friction within the team as a result, if the two do end up fighting for the limelight. Critics and fans alike have speculated on how Bueckers and Bryant could possibly coexist on the court, given their individual histories of leading their teams to victory as the leading lady.
In response to these concerns, Uconn head coach Geno Auriemma has come out with a statement, making it clear that he does not foresee any issues. He stated, "The two have no issue with each other; hell, they've been teammates for Team USA. They are both professionals, and they both want to win and win with Uconn. There won't be a problem." Auriemma's confidence is further emphasized by his enthusiastic remarks about their potential as a duo, boldly claiming that they could be "the best offensive pair in college basketball."
