NARRATIVE !
If basketball didn't work out for Rudy, she was sure a career in espionage would be a perfect fit for her. The week since their awkward first encounter had been nothing short of a masterclass in avoidance. For the past week, she had manoeuvred around her new roommate, Paige, with the precision of a covert operative. Every move was calculated to ensure as little interaction as possible, not because she disliked Paige—she didn't know her well enough for that—but because she wasn't ready. Ready for what exactly? Rudy wasn't sure, but the tension that lingered in the air whenever she thought about their brief meeting told her she wasn't prepared to face it.
The timing was simple: Rudy would wake up before the sun, sneaking out of the apartment while Paige was still asleep. Her mornings were filled with early workouts, running drills alone on an empty court or sweating through conditioning routines that left her too tired to overthink anything. By midday, she'd claim a quiet corner in the library, reviewing class syllabi she wouldn't need for another few weeks. Evening? Another round of shooting drills, a run through the campus trails, or a conveniently long trip to the store.
When she did return to the apartment, it was always late. Late enough that the lights in the common area were off, and the only sounds were the faint hum of the refrigerator and the creak of the floor under her careful steps. She'd slip into her room, shut the door, and breathe a sigh of relief.
On the rare occasion their paths crossed, Rudy's responses were clipped but polite. Paige had tried once or twice to strike up a conversation—a casual "How was your day?" or "Are you settling in okay?"—but Rudy brushed her off with a quick nod and a vague "Fine, thanks" before retreating to her room. It wasn't personal; Rudy just didn't see the point in forcing a connection with someone she might not even click with. Besides, Paige seemed nice enough, but nice wasn't something Rudy trusted easily.
