Silence. Thick, dense silence wraps around Chase as he lies cocooned within the stasis pod. Gradually, faint, muffled sounds begin to stir him from the darkness, soft beeps and a gentle hum, distant and strange, but familiar. Cold seeps into his awareness, then slowly fades, warmth returning in waves that pulse through his limbs, each one bringing him closer to consciousness. His memories drift back like ripples in water.
Where am I? What...what was I doing?
Chase's eyelids flicker, heavy and reluctant. Dim, golden light seeps in, blurred and dreamlike, as if he's caught between two worlds. Then it clicks, the mission. The PAW Patrol. He's on a spaceship, with Everest and Rocky. And, somewhere far behind him, Skye is waiting.
A faint hiss signals the stasis pod's cover lifting, releasing him to the glow of the control room. Chase takes a slow, tentative breath, feeling the recycled air fill his lungs, cool and metallic.
"Rise and shine, sleepyhead." Everest's voice breaks through his fogged mind, playful and familiar, echoing in his ears.
Blinking, Chase focuses on her face as she stands beside him, a teasing smile quirking her mouth. Her fur is fluffed from stasis, and her eyes sparkle with amusement. "You took your time waking up," she adds, giving the edge of his pod a gentle tap.
"Guess I needed an extra minute," Chase mutters with a sheepish grin, his voice scratchy from the long sleep. He stretches out his limbs, savoring the stiffness that gradually loosens with each movement.
Rocky, already at his station, glances over, barely lifting his gaze from his screens. "I bet you'd be the last one up," he says with a chuckle, tapping his pen on a notepad filled with figures. "Had to bet against myself."
Chase shakes his head, smiling as he tests his legs, steadying himself against the pod. "Eight months asleep... and I still feel like I just woke up from a long nap."
"Guess that's what happens when your body's still catching up," Everest says, and her gaze drifts toward the control deck, where the human crew works quietly at their stations. "They're all pros at this, but us? We're still getting used to the whole sleep-through-half-a-year thing."
Commander Jason Reeve, the head of their mission, adjusts his headset, focused on the digital map of their position in space. He looks over at them, his face serious but calm. "Welcome back to the land of the conscious, pups. The trip seems to have treated you all well. Take a look outside if you're ready. We've got quite a view."
Angela Brooks, a young woman with sharp eyes and an excited energy, looks up briefly from her console. "You've got great timing. We just entered orbit around Mars about an hour ago."
Chase's eyes widen as it hits him. Mars, they're here. Eight months asleep, and they're finally in orbit around the first world on their journey. Somewhere deep in his heart, the enormity of it pulses: they're closer than ever to finding hope for Earth.
Dr. Adam Sinclair, a tall, kind-faced geophysicist, raises a hand in greeting as he passes by. "You're in for a treat. We just finished the first set of scans. Nothing like it," he says, glancing toward the observation window.
Dr. Mark Evans, the ship's medical officer, approaches Chase with a small scanner in hand. He looks exhausted, as if he hasn't fully caught up on his own rest. "Let's run a quick checkup," he says, efficient but kind. "We want to make sure everyone's handling the wake-up smoothly."
Chase holds out a paw, letting Dr. Evans pass the scanner over him. "I feel fine, a bit groggy," Chase says. "It feels like I closed my eyes just a minute ago."
"Good sign," Dr. Evans replies, nodding as he checks his readings. "Hydrate and stretch often today; your muscles will feel better in a few hours. We'll take it slow for a bit."
