The first of the four final weeks before entering the wormhole has begun, and the team is focused, immersed in learning every nuance of the spacecraft. In the command room, Chase and Everest listen intently as Dr. Sinclair and Angela Brooks walk them through the intricacies of each control panel. The room is a symphony of glowing screens, complex buttons, and switches that hum with purpose under their fingers. It has been almost one week since they woke up and they have learnt already so much.
Dr. Sinclair moves through the explanations methodically, pausing at each station to highlight key systems. "This panel here," he says, gesturing at a sleek control board, "monitors fuel levels and propulsion efficiency. If any indicator here turns yellow or red, it's critical you alert the crew. And this," he continues, showing a smaller, secondary screen, "is the navigation overlay. It's your map to the stars, giving you direction as well as distance markers to our checkpoints."
Angela Brooks takes over at the next set of controls, pointing out the interface that manages life support systems. "This is the Environmental Control and Life Support System, ECLSS. It keeps our atmosphere here stable and breathable. You'll need to check it regularly." Chase nods, his eyes darting across the interface, absorbing each word, storing it in memory like a sponge.
Commander Reeve observes them from a distance, arms folded, with a look of satisfaction as he watches their progress. He steps in occasionally, emphasizing the importance of protocol and the responsibilities each of them holds. "One mistake in space," he says, "and it could be the last. This isn't like the missions back home. Every second counts here."
Meanwhile, Rocky is stationed in the data lab, his eyes glued to a vast wall of monitors displaying readings from Planet Aquila. Next to him is KITS, the advanced AI bot with a sleek, angular build, designed for quick analysis and instant feedback. Aquila's data comes through in periodic bursts, each frame painting a picture of the icy-blue planet's cloud-drenched atmosphere and the extensive bodies of water scattered across its surface.
As Rocky examines the readings, he notices a peculiar irregularity: the signals are coming in rapid and uneven intervals. There's something about the frequency that unsettles him. Each time he thinks he's caught up with the stream of information, new data arrives, fresh as if transmitted just moments before. He frowns, drumming his paw on the console, wondering if there's more going on beneath the planet's surface, or perhaps something to do with the wormhole's effect on time. The thought sends a chill through him, but he brushes it off, deciding to investigate further before sharing his theory.
Later, Chase wanders into the lab, his fur still ruffled from the hours of training but his eyes bright with excitement. He finds Rocky staring intently at a set of coordinates on the screen. Curious, Chase asks, "Hey, Rocky, can you explain more about the wormhole? I mean, I know it's supposed to take us far, but how exactly does it work?"
Rocky perks up at the question, a chance to dive into something he's been learning deeply about. "Alright," he says, grabbing a piece of paper from the table and folding it in half. "Imagine this paper is the universe." He taps one side of the paper. "Here's point A, which is us, and on the other side," he taps the opposite side, "is point B, the place we want to go. Normally, you'd have to travel across the paper from A to B, right?"
Chase nods, following closely.
"But with a wormhole," Rocky says, picking up a pen and poking a hole straight through the folded paper, "it's like you're folding space itself. The wormhole makes a shortcut, so point A and point B connect directly. You're not traveling through space as much as you're jumping across it."
Everest and Dr. Sinclair enter just in time to catch the explanation, both of them drawn by Rocky's clear and concise breakdown. Everest's eyes widen as she watches him, a look of awe spreading across her face. "Wow, Rocky," she says. "That makes it sound so... simple!"
Dr. Sinclair nods approvingly, a hint of a smile breaking her usually serious expression. "You've got it right, Rocky. The wormhole is essentially a tunnel that allows us to bypass the typical constraints of space travel, creating a link between two distant points in space."
Commander Reeve joins them, watching with silent pride as Rocky continues to explain the basics of wormhole travel, the paper still in his paws, folded and marked with his makeshift wormhole. "It's important," he says, "to understand these fundamentals. Out there, knowing exactly what you're dealing with could mean the difference between a successful mission and..." He trails off, letting the gravity of his words hang in the air.Chase, thrilled by Rocky's explanation, glances over at his friend with admiration. "You're a genius, Rocky," he says with a grin, his tail wagging slightly. The team exchanges nods of agreement, each one feeling the weight of their journey, but bolstered by the knowledge they're gaining together.
As the first week of training continues, each day is filled with simulations, strategy meetings, and exercises designed to hone their skills. The crew, now bound by a shared sense of purpose, works tirelessly, each one growing in confidence and knowledge as they prepare to face the mysteries of the universe, and whatever lies on the other side of the wormhole
As the week winds down, the crew gathers in the common area of the spacecraft. Chase and Everest have settled in after a long day of training, exhausted but satisfied with the progress they've made. Suddenly, a familiar voice crackles through the speakers, catching everyone's attention. It's Ryder. The screen in the corner flickers to life, and Ryder's face appears, a warm smile on his face and a familiar glint of determination in his eyes.
"Hey, Chase, Everest, Rocky. I've been keeping up with the mission logs you've sent, and it's a huge relief to know you're three are up there, safe and sound. I can't tell you how many times I've checked the signal, hoping to see some sign of you both doing well. Now that I know you're okay, it feels like a weight's been lifted off of all of us here on Earth."
His gaze shifts slightly, as if he's imagining the vast space they're navigating, and he lets out a thoughtful sigh. "I know it's only been a few days since you both woke up, but seeing you onboard that ship, knowing you're learning everything there is to know... it reminds me of how far you've come. And how far we've all come to make this mission possible. You've got the best minds up there teaching you, and I know it's a lot to absorb, but every bit of it matters. So keep going. Keep pushing forward, because each new thing you learn brings us one step closer to understanding the world beyond our own."
Ryder pauses, a brief moment of reflection crossing his face. He seems to choose his next words carefully. "You're both explorers now, not just pups on a rescue team. You're stepping into the unknown, and I know it can be daunting, but remember: you're not just doing this for us back here on Earth. You're doing this for every pup, for every person who might look up at the stars and wonder what's out there. You're showing all of us what's possible."
He shifts slightly, looking as though he's recalling something personal, something heartfelt. "When I see you up there, I see bravery. I see commitment. We're all so proud of you. So, don't forget we're watching, cheering you on, and waiting for every bit of news you send. We're connected, no matter how far away you are."
The message ends with Ryder leaning in close to the screen, his face softening as he says, "Take care of each other. And remember, you're not just following orders, you're making history."
The screen goes dark, and for a moment, the room is still, the weight of Ryder's words settling over everyone. Chase and Everest exchange glances, a newfound resolve filling their eyes. Ryder's voice lingers in the silence, a steady, reassuring reminder that, even in the vastness of space, they're never truly alone.
