The observation deck hums with a quiet intensity as the crew gathers, each member unable to look away from the sight unfolding before them. Outside the ship's window, the wormhole pulses: a vast, light-blue sphere against the endless backdrop of stars, shimmering with an otherworldly glow. It has an almost liquid quality, translucent yet dense, like something both inviting and ominous.
Chase leans forward, eyes wide. "Why does it look like... that?" he murmurs, the awe in his voice unmistakable.
Rocky steps up beside him, his gaze fixed on the phenomenon. "A wormhole warps spacetime," he explains, voice steady but tinged with a touch of awe himself. "Imagine space as a flat sheet of paper, and the wormhole as a bridge that punches through it, connecting two distant points. That's why it looks like a sphere; it's as if space itself has folded in on itself, making this... gateway."
"But it's also unpredictable." Rocky continues. "Every theory, every equation we've studied, it's just that, a theory. None of us truly know what's on the other side. It could be anything, anywhere... even any time."
Angela, standing nearby with her arms crossed, has a slight smile playing at her lips, one eyebrow arched with curiosity. She seems just as intrigued as she is cautious. The wormhole appears on her data screen as a series of glowing, shifting numbers, each value changing as the ship inches closer to it.
Everest, eyes reflecting the strange glow from the wormhole, breaks the silence. "Why would a wormhole just... appear here, of all places?" She turns to Angela, her voice thoughtful, yet tinged with an undercurrent of anxiety that only Chase and Rocky would notice.
Angela's expression softens as she considers the question, her usual analytical demeanor giving way to something deeper, almost reverent. "That's one of the universe's greatest mysteries," she says, her voice calm yet layered with wonder. "Some scientists believe wormholes are natural, that they occur when certain gravitational forces collide perfectly. But others theorize they're artificial, perhaps even created by beings far more advanced than we can imagine, beings who understand spacetime in ways we're only beginning to grasp. As we can move across space, they can move across time making the past and future, quite nothing to them."
"Beings?" Chase echoes, caught off guard. He glances at Everest, and they share a look, both processing the idea that someone, or something, could have built the very bridge they're about to cross.
Everest, sensing the growing tension around her, straightens and speaks with quiet confidence. "If the other teams made it through, so can we. We've trained for this, and we've got the best crew possible." She pauses, meeting each set of eyes with a steady gaze. "Let's keep our heads and remember why we're here."
Angela nods in silent approval, her eyes flicking back to the wormhole on her monitor as if to double-check the ship's approach. "Everest is right," she says, her voice carrying the weight of years of experience. "This is what we came for, the unknown. But make no mistake, this is going to be the hardest thing we've ever done. Once we're in, there's no turning back. You're going to feel things that defy every instinct you have. But if we stay together, we'll make it through."
Chase clenches his jaw, steeling himself. Despite the fear prickling his nerves, he feels a surge of determination in the solidarity around him, a silent promise they're making to each other.
The wormhole looms larger now, its faint glow casting an eerie light across the deck. The team falls silent, each one lost in their own thoughts, some final private moments as they approach the threshold.
As the crew completes their final preparations, an air of tension and anticipation thickens in the cabin. The controlled chaos of last-minute adjustments fills the space, engineers double-check systems, and pilots recalibrate controls. Everyone is on high alert, minds sharpened by the weight of the unknown. This moment, the edge of everything familiar, has finally arrived.
