Whatever it is, it all came together that Friday afternoon when we made our way to the pumpkin patch. A trip to a local farm, picking out pumpkins, posing for selfies—it felt like a celebration of everything I loved about the season, and it was the perfect way to kick off the weekend.
It wasn't just Charm, Jaciyah, Jeyce, Amias, and me; my twin brother Jonathan, Trinity, and our whole family came along for the ride, including Tookie, who was now 16 weeks pregnant.
There's something special about family outings like this, where we all get to be together, laugh, take pictures, and just enjoy the simple moments. And, of course, it was also an excuse for everyone to get a bit silly in the best way possible.
Tookie, glowing in her pregnancy, was dressed comfortably in black spandex leggings and a leather jacket that made her look effortlessly cool, even though she was rocking a short-sleeve top and sneakers. Her baseball cap added just the right touch.
I could see she was loving being out of the house, especially now that she was in the second trimester and not feeling as queasy as she had earlier on.
Still, she wasn't about to let the pregnancy slow her down. She had her camera out almost as much as Charm did, snapping pictures of every little thing. I couldn't help but smile at how she always seemed to be looking at the world through a lens.
We spent a good part of the afternoon wandering the pumpkin patch. The place was packed, with families laughing, kids running around, and the occasional scarecrow looking out over the rows of pumpkins.
Charm was practically giddy as she picked out the perfect one to carve later. We didn't have any grand plans for that part of the day—just a casual stroll through the farm, finding some decor, and getting a bunch of photos to remember it all.
I was there with Amias, and I couldn't help but laugh when he grabbed my hand and started pulling me in all directions. That little boy is a handful—always curious, always full of energy. He wanted to look at every pumpkin, pick up every tiny gourd, and stare at every cornstalk like it was the most fascinating thing he'd ever seen.
At one point, he insisted on climbing into a giant hay barrel that was stacked with pumpkins and corn stalks, and I had to lift him so he could pose for a picture.
After our little photo op, we wandered through the patch some more, checking out the maze they had set up. Of course, Amias wasn't interested in that. He was far more excited about the goats at the animal center.
Charm, Trinity, and Tookie all made a beeline for the small farm area, where goats were bleating and pushing their heads through the fence, hoping for snacks.
I took Amias over to the goats, and he squealed with delight as one of them nuzzled his hand, its soft fur tickling his palm. Charm followed closely behind, snapping photos of the moment.
There was something so peaceful about it all—watching him interact with the animals, laughing and feeding them little bits of food. Tookie got a picture of me kissing Amias on the cheek as he fed one of the goats. It was one of those candid moments that I couldn't help but treasure.
"Can you carry him on your shoulders?" Charm asked, looking over at me as Amias reached up with his tiny arms, practically begging for a lift.
I lifted him easily, feeling his tiny hands grasping my hair as he squealed in excitement. He was always so enthusiastic about everything, and it was impossible not to be caught up in his joy.
As I walked through the maze with him perched high on my shoulders, I could feel the eyes of people around us—parents with kids, and couples holding hands. And I was so happy in that moment. We were just a family, enjoying a fall afternoon, no rush, no worries.
Tookie took a photo of us as we wandered through the maze, and I couldn't help but grin at the way Amias was reaching out to grab handfuls of corn stalks as we passed. Charm, walking alongside me, looked up with a smile that I swear could light up the whole farm.
"Don't you just love this?" she asked, her voice soft, almost like she was thinking out loud.
"I do," I replied, squeezing her hand. "It's perfect. I'm glad we're all here."
We spent the next hour taking selfies, goofing off, and just being together. Tookie had somehow convinced Jonathan to climb to the top of one of the hay pyramids with her, and soon the rest of us followed, the whole group laughing as we posed atop the bales of hay.
"I want a picture of you two," Tookie called, aiming her camera at me and Charm, who was standing at the top, laughing at the silliness of it all.
"Why don't you kiss her?" Tookie shouted.
I blinked, surprised by her enthusiasm. I glanced over at Charm, my heart racing a little. I didn't want to mess this up, but she smiled at me, a look in her eyes that told me she was more than ready.
"Are you sure?" I asked her, a little hesitant.
She nodded, her lips curving into a smile that made my chest tighten with warmth.
I leaned in, gently cupping her face, and kissed her. It wasn't rushed or forced. It was easy. Right. And the world felt even more perfect in that moment. It was like the whole world faded away for a second.
Just me and her. Maybe it was the crisp fall air or the golden sunlight, but I felt so connected to her at that moment. I kissed her back, and the world seemed to quiet down like we were the only two people in the pumpkin patch.
Tookie snapped a picture of us, and it felt like one of those moments where everything was perfect. Charm looked at me, her eyes sparkling.
"See? That wasn't so hard," Tookie said, snapping the picture. "I knew you two had it in you."
As we made our way back to the car, the sky beginning to darken with the approach of evening, I felt an overwhelming sense of contentment. It wasn't just the pumpkins or the pictures or the pumpkin-spiced everything—it was the people.
It was us, being together. The simple things in life. Fall might be just a season, but this—this felt like a moment I would hold onto, no matter where we went next.
