Chapter Seventeen...Harmonies and Hiccups
The studio lights were dimmed just right, the air thick with the kind of anticipation that only a recording session could bring. Charm sat in front of the microphone, her headphones secured around her ears, her eyes closed for a moment as she let the music wash over her.
She had spent weeks crafting I'm With You/Be Still, pouring her heart into every lyric, every note. It was a song about love, faith, and the quiet moments when everything felt still, everything felt right. She had envisioned it as a reflective piece, something personal—something intimate.
But as she glanced across the control room, the reality of what was unfolding in the recording booth made her want to tear her hair out. The balance between family and professionalism was always delicate, but today, it seemed as though her family had thrown that balance out the window and were having the time of their lives.
Joshua had insisted on being part of the song. He wasn't a natural singer, but his enthusiasm for the project, and his deep connection to the music, made him a valuable presence. When he had asked if he could add some vocals to the track, Charm had agreed, despite knowing that Joshua's voice was a far cry from a trained singer's.
Now, Joshua was in the booth with a microphone in his hand, leaning into it as if he were auditioning for a solo album. "Put autotune on my voice, uce," he called out to Marco, the producer who was sitting behind the console, watching the proceedings with a bemused smile.
Joshua's voice had a raspy edge to it, and while it had character, it wasn't exactly the smoothest instrument. But that was Joshua—bold and confident, always willing to take risks, even if they were a little outside of his vocal range.
Marco, ever the professional, nodded and began fiddling with the settings on the mixing board. Charm rolled her eyes but couldn't help but smile. She was used to Joshua's quirks by now. His confidence was part of his charm, no pun intended.
Still, as much as she loved him, she couldn't help but feel a little flustered. She had come into this session thinking she would be creating something meaningful, and now it felt like she was walking into a circus.
The chaos was made even worse by Amias, their two-year-old son, who had been allowed to sing on the track as well. Amias wasn't exactly harmonizing with the grown-ups, but his voice—soft and pure, almost innocent—added an unexpected layer to the song.
He was in the booth with Joshua, his tiny hands gripping the microphone as he attempted to sing in his way. It wasn't traditional, but the sincerity with which he belted out his little heart made the room stop every time. Charm could hear him now, babbling in the background of Joshua's recorded lines, his voice higher-pitched and free-spirited.
"You're doing great, baby!" Charm called out to Amias through the glass, her voice laced with encouragement.
Amias beamed in response, oblivious to the complexities of the music being created around him. He just wanted to sing, and that innocence was something Charm cherished.
But as if on cue, the studio door swung open, and in walked Jeyce—Joshua's twelve-year-old son, who had a personality just as loud as his father's. Jeyce didn't waste any time, walking straight into the booth and grabbing his mic. "I'm ready!" he announced, his grin wide as he threw his head back, ready to jump into the fun.
"No, Jeyce," Charm said quickly, holding up a hand as she tried to stay focused. "We're working on this one, okay? We're almost done."
But Jeyce was undeterred. He wasn't about to sit on the sidelines when the spotlight was on. "Let me at 'em!" he shouted, spinning around in the booth with reckless energy, causing the mic to feedback slightly.
