I could already tell he thought this was going to be an easy class. When I suggested we take a boxing class together, I knew he'd think it was just some fun way to switch things up. He was, after all, training for wrestling, and boxing was great cross-training.
But what he didn't know was that my dad had put me in boxing when I was in high school to help me deal with the bullying I'd been going through at the time. He didn't want me to be a victim, and he didn't want me to ever feel helpless. So he took me to the gym, put a pair of gloves on me, and taught me how to defend myself.
It started out as a way to build confidence, but after a while, I fell in love with the sport.
At first, my boxing lessons were about survival. But over the years, I got pretty good at it. Not good enough to compete professionally, but good enough to make sure I could handle myself in most situations. And I was no stranger to stepping into a ring when I needed to. Not to mention, my body knew how to move—how to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, as they say.
