I sat up in bed, groggily stretching my arms and looking to my side. The sheets were wrinkled and sunken in where Alex had been laying, however she was no longer there. I looked around the room, trying to figure out where she went. With no sign of her in the small space, I got up and dragged myself to the bathroom. Not seeing her there, I decided she must have stepped out. I walked out of the bathroom, noticing movement out of the corner of my eye. I turned to see a man lying in the bed, his hands behind his head and his legs crossed lazily. He looked familiar yet blurry, but I couldn't place where I knew him from, everytime I squinted to get a better look, his image just got blurrier and blurrier. The white wallpaper seemed to swirl and the room felt to be spinning. I closed my eyes, resting one hand over my left eye and using the other to clutch the wall, trying to stabilize myself as I grew dizzy.
"Tsk tsk Tim...not taking your pills? Don't you remember what happens when you don't take them?" I opened one of my eyes, looking up at the man, now sat up and smiling an almost inhuman smile.
"Who the fuck are you?"
"It's been almost a year since you let me take over Tim, a year since you blacked out, since you got a break from reality. Don't you miss it?" Suddenly the figure came into focus, and I recognized his face as my own. His voice was deeper and his features were exaggerated, but it was me nonetheless. I watched the man pull on my mask before standing up and staring at me.
"Fuck off. I'm gonna take my damn pills the second I get back." I rubbed my forehead, feeling a sharp pain as I searched the walls in confusion.
"Just let me free, it makes me sick to watch you suck up to that freak. We used to despise him, now you and Brian are like his fucking pets. Don't even get me started on that girl." He groaned, throwing his head back dramatically.
"I'm no one's pet. We have a deal, he cures me of my sickness and I do his dirty work. It's an equal exchange." I grit out, moving my hand and looking at him.I watched him hunch over as he laughed. What began as a normal chuckle gradually intensified, growing louder, deeper, and more maniacal. Goosebumps prickled my arms at the sound, and my face twisted in disgust.
"God, you're so funny, Tim! Truly hilarious. Y'know, the first thing I'll do when I take control is kill that pretty little girlfriend of yours. Toughen you back up—just like the good ol' days," he sneered, lounging lazily back on the bed. My blood boiled, fists clenching as his words echoed in my mind.
"Stay the fuck away from her," I growled, stepping closer.
"Ha! I'll do as I please." He closed his eyes, dismissing me entirely. I moved forward again, my feet hitting the box spring as I loomed over him.
"Don't fuck with me—I mean it. Stay the fuck away from her."
He smirked. "What are you going to do about it, huh? Kill me? To kill me would be to kill yourself, fuckface, and we both know you're not man enough to do that." Immediately I climbed on top of him, placing my hands around his neck and beginning to squeeze. I watched as he choked out laughs beneath me. I began squeezing harder, trying to silence the noise.
"Shut up. Shut UP, SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP." I screamed, watching his face contort under the mask, his hands clawing at mine in a frantic attempt to break free.
"Tim!" I heard her voice shout, jolting me. My head snapped toward the window, her voice pulling me from the chaos. My heart pounded so loudly, it nearly drowned out the ringing in my ears, still throbbing from his choked laughter.
"Alex...?" I stammered, my eyes darting around the wall, looking for any trace of the voice or the girl behind it. As I was searching I heard a choked gag from under me, I turned my attention back down. My eyes widened in terror as I registered what I was looking at, it was no longer the masked man, but instead Alex. I immediately let go, stumbling back until I hit the wall behind me. She shot up, grasping her throat and coughing desperately. "A-Alex-" Her furious gaze locked onto mine.
