~~~~~
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
Draco watches you leave his dorm again. It's killing him not to tell you what is going on with him. That he's a death eater now, but there is nothing he can do about it. It's too dangerous for him to tell you, or anyone really. It's killing him beyond belief because the two of you tell each other everything.
But this?
He can't tell you this.
When the morning comes
When we see what we've become
In the cold light of day we're a flame in the wind
Not the fire that we've begun
Every argument, every word we can't take back
'Cause with all that has happened
I think that we both know the way that this story ends
Because he is being so secretive, the only logical explanation your friends could come up with for his sudden distance was that he was possibly cheating. You didn't want to believe that, but the facts were staring you in the face. The distance, the last-minute canceling of dates, the mysterious disappearances... they all added up to him sneaking around with someone else. You were heartbroken at the idea that your handsome, perfect boyfriend could have found someone else, but deep down, you thought your friends' suspicions were correct.
Then only for a minute
I want to change my mind
'Cause this just don't feel right to me
I wanna raise your spirits
I want to see you smile but
Know that means I'll have to leave
Know that means I'll have to leave
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
Draco knows that he is hurting you. It breaks his heart to no end. After your last argument about how secretive he's being, he knows you think he's cheating. He watches you across the Great Hall, laughing at something Ginny Weasley was saying. You two haven't spoken since that argument three days ago, but the way you look, so happy and beautiful, makes his heart ache. You don't deserve the pain he's causing. You don't deserve the burden that being with him would bring, and you most definitely wouldn't deserve the danger being with him would cause.
When the evening falls
And I'm left there with my thoughts
And the image of you being with someone else
Well, it's eating me up inside
But we ran our course, we pretended we're okay
Now if we jump together at least we can swim
Far away from the wreck we made
Draco has made up his mind. He needs to end things. Now. The tears he can see in your eyes during arguments scream to him that he is causing your pain. That, in turn, causes his. The look in your eyes when you fight hurts him more than the Dark Mark ever will. He would gladly endure the Cruciatus Curse over and over again than know that he is the cause of your pain.
Then only for a minute
I want to change my mind
'Cause this just don't feel right to me
I wanna raise your spirits
I want to see you smile but
Know that means I'll have to leave
Know that means I'll have to leave
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
You try to fight the breakup. Try to beg him to stay with you. He'd shown up outside of your dorm one day. He asked to talk with you. You'd happily let him in, because you'd thought he was finally going to explain his actions. Little did you know, that wasn't the case.
So now here you are. Begging, tears streaming down your face, for your boyfriend to stay with you. That mask of cold disgust graces his features, making him look all the more like the boy his father wants him to be. The boy that he isn't. He turns away from you and leaves your room, leaving you crying, heartbroken, on the floor.
So I'll go, I'll go
I will go, go, go
So I'll go, I'll go
I will go, go, go
As the sound of your tears got farther away, his heart cracked more and more. Each step he took was in the wrong direction, and every cell in his body was screaming for him to go back. To apologize. To wrap you in his arms and kiss you. Hug you. Love you. The only person to ever bother trying to befriend the boy behind the mask.
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
Even though I might not like this
I think that you'll be happier, I want you to be happier
You run to the hospital wing as fast as your legs would carry you. Word of Harry and Draco's duel had spread amongst the students and you'd heard Draco was hurt. Even though you'd been over for three weeks, your feelings for him hadn't faded.
You loved him after all.
So when Harry was complaining about what had happened you'd shocked him and the rest of your friends by silently walking up to him and slapping him across the face. The sight of you during that moment had made all of your friends pause.
You were thin and pale, a result of you barely eating since the breakup. Your eyes were red from crying, and the bags under your eyes clearly showed just how little you've been sleeping. But what made them pause was the anger in your eyes. Even though Draco broke your heart, you still loved him, and your friends could see that from the burning anger in your eyes.
Then only for a minute (only for a minute)
I want to change my mind
'Cause this just don't feel right to me
I wanna raise your spirits (wanna raise your spirits)
I want to see you smile but
Know that means I'll have to leave
Know that means I'll have to leave
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
You made it to the hospital wing to find him unconscious and wrapped in bandages. You sit down beside his bed and grab his hand in yours. As you do, his sleeve gets pulled up. You notice a dark marking on his arm and gently pull up the rest of his sleeve, revealing his dark mark to you. Your gentle gasp of surprise stirs Draco from his slumber.
"(Y...Y/N)..." He weakly grunts. You tear your eyes away from his mark to his beautiful, scratched face. He smiles weakly at you and you turn back to the mark. You gently began to trace it with your fingers before his hiss of pain stops you. "Draco," you breathe. He weekly grunts and sits up. "Now you understand."
You do. You suddenly understand the distance, the fights, the dissappearances, all of it. And now you understand the need for the breakup. With soft tears stinging your eyes, you nod. Draco reaches up to cup your face. "Look at me, love. I will always love you. I'll never stop. No matter what happens. When all this is over, you and I will find each other. We will have our happily ever after, okay? Until then, live your life. I love you."
He pulls you closer and gently presses his lips to yours. The two of you share your last kiss, each of you pouring as much love and pain, happiness and heartbreak, and passion and fear into the kiss. When you are forced to pull away you quietly stand up and leave the room. At the door, you turn and say one last thing to the man who stole your heart.
"Goodbye, Draco. I love you too."
So I'll go, I'll go
I will go, go, go
