Before I introduce the titles and their usage (my usage, not the official), I wanted to leave a friendly reminder: this is a Historial Fanfiction, made by me, a sultanate of women's fan. No hate to absolutely any of the historical figures, this is a drama, after all. This is not history. On that note, I am not yet a historian, and my main language isn't English, so please bear with me.
G L O S S A R Y
🕯️Valide Sultan: literally translates to 'mother sultana', therefore was the mother of the reigning sultan, leader of the harem.
🕯️Haseki Sultan: title given by the sultan to a concubine/consort that elevates their status from slave to sultana. It was created so the sultan could marry slaves/concubines, but he didn't have to.
🕯️Sultanas: daughters, sisters and aunts of the sultan. These are dynasty sultanas, free women who do not belong to the harem.
⸻ Hamın Sultan: daughters of dynasty sultanas.
⸻ Sultanzade Bey: sons of dynasty sultanas (had no claim to the throne and thus weren't affected by the fratricide law).
🕯️Şehzades: sons of the sultan. They had equal rights to claim the throne, never minding their age or mother. When one of them ascended to the throne after the death of his father, following the fratricide law, they killed all of their brothers (full-blooded or not) and their nephews, so they wouldn't be succession wars.
🕯️Kadın Hatun: consorts of the sultan, mother of his children. They had an article that enlisted their rank based on who had the elder living son (baş was the first, ikinci the second, üçüncü the third, etc.)
In this story, the shortage of the title will be Kadın for consorts with sons, and Hatun for consorts with only daughters.
🕯️Kalfa: supervisor/manager of the harem. They were not concubines and often had a friendly relationship with the royal family (especially the sultan and the valide).
🕯️Daye: wetnurse of dynatic members, rulers of the harem in case of absence of their mother.
🕯️Ağa: male eunuchs that worked in the harem.
🕯️Hatun: title that could translate to 'lady'.
🕯️Gözde: 'favourite' of the sultan. They have slept with him at least once.
🕯️Cariye: slaves of the harem, lowest rank within it.
