Chapter 15: "First Threat."

John

Along with the first rays of sunlight, comes the sparkle of morning dews that covered the trees' thick leaves which acted like a roof above the forest ground. With my fingers, I raked my dark raven hair as a few drops of dew fell over my head.

The air was thick and humid, making it hard to visualize the surroundings, with the fog and all. I looked upon the horizon and stared longingly on the rising sun, wanting its warmth that never caressed my cold skin. Its rays trying at its best to pierce through the thickness of the fog.

Up in these hills, I have a clear view of the forest below. The forest was dense and became denser with murderous aura lurking behind the trees' shadows. I can feel the malice even from this distance. The feeling is creepy, like predatory eyes in the shadows watching you walk through a dark alley, waiting for the perfect moment to brutally murder you. You can feel the fear from knowing its existence, yet you don't turn around and are trying to heighten your courage as you walk faster to just get the hell out of the said alley.
High with adrenaline, pressured by fear.

Any minute now.

The mercenaries cautiously began trespassing the pack's territory. First came I assume their leader, raising hand signals as his troop begins to follow. As they come out of their hiding, one by one shifted into their own wolves. I can only see their fur as dark, for light was inadequate. They looked like shadows moving like a stream of water.

I must say, despite being brutes, they are skilled in stealth.

I patiently watched as each followed their leader dashing from tree to tree with their light feet, steady breathing, alert ears and menacing red eyes.

One must have felt my observant eyes, because he looked at my direction searching for me. I shifted quickly so that the tree where I was peeking, now completely blocks me from view. I leaned on the woody trunk as I released the breath I unconciously held. After a few seconds, I dared to peek again. His co-member is nudging him to move, but he searched a little bit more, then gave up and continued their trespass, though he did turn his head one last time with no avail of finding me.

I brought my phone out, unlocking it by sliding the screen and searching the contacts for a specific person.

Diana Thompson.

It rang twice, then was answered.
Considering the time, her voice was that of wide awake and considering the situation, hers was calm.

"Want me to sound the alarm?" She asked, and I can hint a slight smile.

"If you will." I replied. "The pack would be grateful."

"They should be." She chuckled. "You reduced their number to how much?" I can hear her footsteps as she speak from the phone. She must be in a secluded place for her steps to echo. They sounded like heels tapping on metal.

"You might want to lighten your steps." I advised. "Anyway, they are down to three-fourth. More or less."

"I doubt anyone will hear me." Smugly, she said. She must have put the guards to sleep.
"Only eliminated a quarter?" She giggled, and it was annoying.
"And you're proud of that?" She gave out a quiet laugh.
"You could do better." I rolled my eyes with her teases and compliment.

"It was quite time-consuming luring them out, each, then killing them off, silently." I explained.
