chapter vii
" take a breath "
MAEVE
First Agatha drags us to Lilia's psychic readings store, then we pay a visit to Jen who eats her own candles and now we are stalking someone. Don't get me wrong, I did break into Agatha's house, but things are starting to get a little more felony-like than I thought.
"She's a blood witch," Agatha explains to Billy, who, based on the number of questions he has asked her, seems to think that Agatha is an encyclopedia.
"A blood witch is. . ." Billy trails off, waiting for Agatha to feel the gaps. She looks past Billy, paying close attention to something specific. Knowing Agatha for a good two days, I simply assume I would rather not know what she is thinking and plotting. Playing it safe.
I take a sip from my soda and clear my throat. "She's the daughter of a witch," I explain my soda still in my hand. Honestly, I don't know how the soda from takeaways is always better, but I can't seem to get enough of it.
Agatha nods and places down her half-eaten corn dog. "In this case, her mum was a witch" she begins, her eyes focusing on Billy, "and also a famous goddess of rock"
It takes Billy a second but when he puts two and two together, her whisper-shouts in amazement, "Lorna Wu? As in Lorna Wu and the Coral Shore?"
Agatha raises an eyebrow, "Easy, tiger. You know her?"
"Not at all but-" before Bluey gets to finish, I swiftly interrupt him, having more fun than I should probably have. Billy honestly has some self-restraint because, if I were him, I would have blasted me.
"Yeah, we can see that you don't know her," I joke, the last part in air quotes. Billy sends me a glare, which is understandable so I won't comment further on that. We keep on cheat chatting about everything and nothing.
As I tell a story to Billy, Agatha shakes my arm. "Get up," she orders and I look at her weirdly. "Let's go," she continues, her voice more firm. We only just got here, I don't get it-.
"Is that a rat?" I shout, jumping up from my seat, and pushing the chair to the ground. I look at the furry little creature that makes its way towards us and I try to get behind Agatha in a lame attempt. "Please, let's go," I plead disgusted and, honestly, scared for my life due to that stupid rat.
"Yeah, let's get going," Agatha mumbles and walks off first, Billy and I following her like lost puppies. I can literally feel Billy's eyes on me. He always made fun of my fear of rats but have you seen them? They are gross. No hate towards rats but just like I don't bother their little community, I expect them to not bother mine.
-
I hate malls, basically because they are always crowded. The fear of just. . . losing it and hurting people just because I don't control whatever power I have is sickening. To be honest, I've been more social these two days with Agatha than I am in a month. She is a bad influence.
Agatha pushed us into a store as we tried to get away from the rat and, fortunately, it got last through the crowds. I don't even know where we are but the accessories are stunning. The aesthetic is so Billy-coded and I'm here for it.
Billy picks up a pair of sunglasses and puts them on. They have a little nose extension which honestly looks so cute on him.
"Rumor has it Lorna Wu was lost to the Witches' Road," Agatha states, walking past the stands covered with necklaces and sunglasses. I do wonder how Agatha survived the Witches' Road, considering she is the most reckless person on Mother Earth.
She even ate the eviction notice note where Lilia wrote the names of the coven because she didn't want me and Billy to find out the last name. Talk about logic and responsibility.
"What?" Billy questions, shocked by the latest revelations. I on the other hand, simply stare at the necklaces that hang from the stand, looking if something catches my eye.
I have heard about The Road, one way or another. I'm a witch, it comes with the job. My parents never really bothered to talk to us about that sort of thing so Octavia, being older, sought answers to her questions elsewhere.
I still remember the nights she would read those stupid ancient grimoires and firmly instructed me to never touch anything like that because it's dangerous. Spoiler alert: I'm not the hypocrite in this story.
She lost the battle against herself, I'm more powerful. She chose to lie, I was never naive.
"I know I have an aesthetic, but what are we doing here?" Billy asks, eyeing a certain pair of earrings. He walks past them, though, but I stay still looking at the pair of earrings. Fuck it.
I'm too lost in my own bubble to understand why Agatha suddenly tells Billy to run. He questions the same thing, but she insists. Billy runs towards the exit only to meet the floor, thankfully not with his face.
A woman with black hair and orange streaks put her foot in front of Billy's, making him trip. The alarms start beeping and the woman grabs Billy's hands and forces them to stay behind his back. I put my questions aside, realising that this is another one of Agatha's doing.
I get to Billy and kneel beside him to make sure he is okay. "Are you doing okay?" I question softly and he mumbles a yes, still trying to understand his surroundings. Now that I think back, he might have hit his head. He has never looked this weird and out of place before.
To my surprise, Agatha kneels next to me as well. Don't tell me she started caring now.
"Alice Wu Gulliver?" Agatha says, making it sound more like a question. The woman turns her head to Agatha, multiple question marks appearing around her head, like in those cartoons. "I'm Agatha Harkness. These are my little bundles of joy, Teen and Avie. We need a Protection Witch to join us on the Witches' Road. What do you say?"
Well, if she asked me, I would have answered with, Agatha Harkness is wild. I mean, every witch alive knew that but seeing it in person gives me another kind of chills.
Also, I hope she doesn't make Avie a thing. What am I, five?
