chapter x
" the trials wait "

MAEVE

The Road's dark ground covered with blue leaves and dirt past a certain point turned into a sandy road that led to a Barbie beach house straight out of Jen's dreams. Though The Road seems to have the Moon as a companion, that sandy getaway is accompanied by the Sun.

The sound of storks singing to their flock set the mood for what's ahead of us. Looks like we are heading straight for a relaxing evening. Perfect, that's all I needed.

"Now this is a house," Jen comments, eyeing the house in awe. If it was up for sale, I bet Jen would immediately sign the papers and get it.

"Right off your vision board," Agatha responds, side-eyeing Jen. I smirk slightly, not in the mood to fully laugh at Agatha being. . . Agatha. There will be plenty of time for that later when we are inside the house at least.

Mrs Hart shakes her head rapidly. "Maybe this is the end," she says panicked, her voice shaky with everything she has been through with us. Let's not forget that she almost died by drowning in quicksand.

"That would be such a bummer," Billy admitted, silently criticising the house in his head. It's not my fault that I can hear him, he thinks loudly. He better turn down the volume otherwise I will have a migraine by the time we finish the trial.

"Plus, it's not like we are going to heaven. This house doesn't bring out hell vibes," I remark and Billy chuckles. He holds out his palm and I slap the flat of my palm against his.

Billy and I are chaotic. Not in a bad way; we simply like to mess around with each other. We match each other's freak, in a way. He is my twin flame and I would do anything to protect him from this witchy world that is caving in with each passing second, ready to bring us down.

Lilia leads the way and we all stand on the porch. I try to steal a glance of the house inside, but the curtains are shielding my sight. Lilia runs her fingers on the carved design on the wooden door.

"The phases-" I begin, my attention is drawn to the carved design.

Lilia finishes, "-of the moon." We both share a look, not of hate or any sort. . . simply a look that reflects understanding.

Billy takes a better look at the design. "It's full. The water phase," he points out, earning a nod from Lilia. Right now might be the first time that Lilia has fully acknowledged our existence and actually communicated with us, even with glances and nods.

"Shall we go inside?" I question, motioning to the door with raised eyebrows, waiting for their response. I really need to sit down. I have never felt this tired before. Okay, I haven't felt this tired in a while.

Mrs Hart is the first to move and she makes her way to the doorbell that is on the left side of the doorframe. "Well, we don't want to surprise anyone," she explains and rings the doorbell, its sound announces that we are outside.

"Don't we?" Agatha playfully says and grabs my wrist with a tight grip before opening the door, not waiting for the other coven members to speak their minds about this. She walks us inside and into the living room.

It's very lit. Honestly, I preferred the calmness that the moon had to offer. Can we just ban the sun? Thank you very much.

"It's not exactly the stuff of nightmares," Jen said, her eyes filled with a spark. She really loves this place.
