Burns.
Y/N slowly walked toward the smell of smoke and death.
He'd been gone for only ten minutes from where Maki and the others had been. But that in itself felt like an eternity when it came to the stressful night.
He felt that same dreadful feeling as before. His heart pounded at an unimaginable rate as he ran toward his sister.
'Please be okay.'
His silent prayers would only be rejected from what he had seen next.
Maki laid on the floor as her body was riddled with countless burn marks across her body. She was paralyzed throughout her body due to the shock of the pain.
Her eyes twitched around until they finally stopped meeting Y/N's gaze.
Tears beginning to fall as her heart felt a wash of relief course through her.
Her brother was safe.
As if holding the most delicate glass sculpture he carried her motionless body in his arms. His eyes carried a blank expression as his mind felt numb.
"nii-san...I'm sorry—" her words were stopped as her weak body shuddered in pain.
It had appeared as if talking alone was far too much.
"Save your strength...this is all my fault."
Yes...of course, it had always been his fault from the beginning.
Had he been more cruel. Had he been more level headed, none of this would've happened.
Had he been what jujutsu society expected of him none of this would have happened.
Had he killed Suguru Geto and annihilated his body entirely none of this would have happened.
But he didn't. Because his mind was weak.
Maki felt at ease because no matter what had occurred she knew her brother would've returned for her.
In his arms she felt like a little girl again. Back when she was first taken under his care.
How he used to hold her to get her to sleep when she had night terrors.
"Close your eyes...have no fear." Kazu whispered as she began to feel her eyes grow heavy.
She felt pure again.
"The monsters gone...he's on the run and your brother's here..."
Kazuki's soft voice sang as he carried her toward the medical camp.
"Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...beautiful girl."
She remembered when Kazu used to sing her this song when she was younger.
Through the abuse she faced she had trouble doing much of anything on her own.
But the song was a reminder that her brother was not like the people of the Zenin clan.
With him she was always home.
With him she was never alone.
~~~
Shoko was worried.
Looking down at Maki's sleeping form she was in much better condition than she was when Y/N had brought her in.
Her burns were healed, but she would have scars to tell the tale of what happened to her.
But that wasn't quite what was bugging her.
