Cassie pov

The night air was crisp, and the moon hung high in the sky as I stood in front of the mirror, making final adjustments to the purple gown Elijah had chosen for me. The shimmering fabric clung to my figure, and as I twirled, the dress sparkled under the soft lighting. I could hardly believe I was doing this—going to a prom of all things, with Elijah. The idea was so far from my usual reality, yet it felt like a breath of fresh air, a chance to let go of everything for just one night.

A soft knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. I knew it was Elijah before I even opened it. There was something unmistakable about his presence—calm, commanding, yet comforting. When I opened the door, my breath caught in my throat. Elijah stood there, dressed in a classic black tuxedo that made him look every bit the gentleman I knew him to be. He was stunning, and the way his eyes lit up when he saw me made my heart skip a beat.

“You look… breathtaking,” he said softly, his voice filled with genuine admiration.

I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through me at his words. “You don’t look so bad yourself,” I replied, trying to keep my tone light even as my heart raced. “I guess we’re really doing this, huh?”

He extended his hand to me, and I took it without hesitation. “Yes, we are. And I promise you, it’ll be a night to remember.”

We left my house and headed to the school, the silence between us filled with a comfortable anticipation. As we arrived, the school was alive with music and laughter, the sound spilling out into the night. The building was decorated with twinkling lights, giving it an almost magical quality.

The moment we stepped into the school, all eyes seemed to turn toward us, and I felt a ripple of surprise go through the crowd. It wasn’t just because of the shimmering purple gown Elijah had picked for me, or even the fact that I was walking in with the most composed, unshakeable man I knew. No, it was because Elijah was back in town.

I could see the shock on everyone's faces, especially on Caroline, Matt, and Bonnie’s as we approached them. Caroline was the first to react, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Cassie, Elijah?" she said, her voice a mix of surprise and excitement. "Wow, I didn’t know he was back!"
