Sophie's mouth remained open, a shaky laugh falling from her lips as she considered the possibility that she'd imagined the words he just uttered or mistaken them entirely.

"Was the sex that good?" She joked concluding that he must be messing with her.

Billy recalibrated his thoughts, realising it must have come quite out the blue especially after he had just engrained into her that he didn't want to get married; the conclusion was new to him too and he felt like something had finally just clicked into place after being loose for so long.

"I mean it Soph" He replied more firmly to show he was serious "Marry me"

Sophie felt speechless. Not because she didn't want to of course but because it was all happening so quickly and she hadn't had time to prepare in the slightest, her hair was a tangled mess for god's sake! This wasn't how she had envisioned this moment when she thought about it as a young girl discussing weddings with Nancy on her bed but at the same time, nothing with Billy had been conventional.

"We'be only been dating for like a month" She informed.

Sophie was worried he was acting out of haste and when he was of more sound mind, he would backtrack his words and she knew that would only hurt her more. She felt like she was in a limbo, too scared to fully let herself get excited at the proposal from all the anxious thoughts circling in her head.

"And we've known each other for years" He replied "You're it Soph, you've always been it"

Sophie quickly tossed Billy's shirt over herself for the sake of modesty as he put his own boxers back on and moved round to her side of the bed, getting down onto his knee and taking her hand in his as she watched him with a shaky breath.

"I just needed to know you wanted this kind of future, you don't have to do this now" She said, still completely frazzled by the last five minutes as her brain tried to catch up.

"I want to do this now" He replied "I've felt this way about you for so long and I know it won't change so why prolong the inevitable?"

He hadn't been confident on marriage until this very moment but now he was, he didn't want to waste another second of it by letting the opportunity of doubts to arise and cloud his judgment.

He reached behind his neck with his free hand and gently pulled off the necklace his mother had given him; the one he'd never once removed until right now, and placed it into her hand as a substitute gesture of a ring. Though he knew that the moment should have waited until he actually had one, he knew that she'd know the weight of this regardless and how much the necklace meant to him.

"Sophie Harrington" He began "I've never met anyone quite as graceful, caring or beautiful as you, regardless of my intentions at the beginning, you pulled things out of me that no one has ever come close to doing. Shit, you turned my whole world upside down, in a good way of course"

Sophie felt her cheeks flush as he kneeled before her spewing gentle words as she bit down the grin on her face, taking in the moment so she could remember every little detail.

"Even those years we were apart, I never stopped thinking about you or comparing everyone I met to you" He added "Then that night at the frat house, seeing you again felt like all the air had returned to my lungs and I could finally breathe again"

"Billy..." She breathed, feeling her eyes start to water at what he was saying.

"I know we haven't had the most traditional relationship but I promise i'll work hard to be the best husband I can be for you" He said "Whatever you want, just name it and i'll find a way"
