Hospital - Day 4

In the dim hinterland between consciousness and the void, YN's senses began to stir. The familiar, rhythmic beeping of hospital machines anchored her to reality, a faint, comforting tether to the world she was struggling to rejoin. Soft murmurs washed over her, voices weaving through her fragmented awareness, too distant to grasp fully, yet oddly soothing.

Among the whispers, one voice stood out—clear, familiar, and immensely comforting. Elizabeth's voice was a steady presence, grounding YN amid the disorienting haze of semi-consciousness.

"YN, you're doing great. The doctors are pleased with your progress," Elizabeth murmured, her hand holding YN's with a gentle pressure that spoke volumes. "Just keep fighting, love. I'm right here."

The words seeped into YN's foggy mind, a balm to the confusion and fear that lingered at the edges of her thoughts. She focused on Elizabeth's voice, letting it draw her closer to wakefulness.

Flashback

A sudden shift in her mind's eye transported YN back to a vivid memory—her tenth birthday, celebrated in the shadow of Sterling skyscrapers. Her father's proud declaration, "All this will be yours," echoed in her young ears, not just as a gift, but as a decree.

The scene morphed into another memory—a cold, formal dinner where her mother's words cut sharply through the air, "We are Sterlings, and Sterlings do not falter." The weight of those expectations had felt suffocating, even to her younger self.

End flashback

———

Pulled back to the present by a shift in the room's energy, YN felt another touch, softer and more uncertain than Elizabeth's. Her mother's touch, fraught with worry. Claudia's voice followed, a whisper that YN had to strain to hear. "She's so strong. She must get that from you," Claudia said, likely not realizing YN could hear her.

YN wished she could respond, to reassure her mother, to bridge the gaps that had grown over years. Instead, she focused on breathing, on the sound of Elizabeth's steady assurances.

"You're not alone, YN. We're all here," Elizabeth continued, her voice a thread YN clung to, pulling herself ever so slowly toward full consciousness. Each word was a step closer to the surface, to a life she was suddenly desperate to reclaim fully.

As she hovered on the brink of full awareness, the room came into sharper focus. Elizabeth's hand squeezed hers again, a silent message of support and strength. YN focused on that touch, on the promise it held. It was grounding, a lifeline thrown across the turbulent sea of her recovery.

The door opened, and soft footsteps approached. YN sensed more than saw the figures—likely doctors, come to check on her progress. She couldn't make out their words, but the tone was optimistic, the energy in the room lifting slightly.

Elizabeth leaned closer, her breath warm against YN's ear. "You're getting stronger every day. Everyone's amazed by your progress. Just keep fighting, okay? I need you."

YN concentrated on that voice, on the woman who had stayed by her side through the darkest hours.

———

Elizabeth found herself seated in the hospital cafeteria, a stale cup of coffee cooling untouched before her. Across from her, Nina and Maya looked equally drained, their faces etched with worry and lack of sleep. The small talk had dwindled, leaving a silence filled with the weight of unspoken fears.

Nina broke the silence first, her voice low. "How are you holding up, really?" she asked Elizabeth, concern flickering in her eyes.

Elizabeth managed a weary smile. "I'm here," she said simply. "That's about all I can manage right now. How about you two?"

Maya sighed, pushing her own untouched coffee aside. "It's hard seeing her like this, knowing she's fighting and there's not much we can do to help," she admitted. "But what about Alexander? You mentioned he was causing some trouble?"

Elizabeth glanced around the nearly empty cafeteria before leaning in slightly. "Yes, he's not taking the situation well. He's looking for someone to blame, and I'm an easy target. He's hinted at making sure there are... repercussions at Yale. I think he might try to use his influence to cause problems for me once YN is out of immediate danger."

Nina frowned, her protective instincts flaring up. "That's just cruel. He should be focusing on YN, not on punishing you."

"He's in pain too," Elizabeth said, though it was more of an attempt to understand than to excuse. "But yes, it's not just about his pain. There's a lot at stake. I'm worried about the professional fallout, but more than that, I'm worried about how this might affect YN."

The conversation paused as a group of nurses passed by, their laughter a brief, jarring contrast to the somber mood at the table.

"Is there anything we can do?" Maya asked once they were alone again. "I mean, to help with Alexander or support YN when she wakes up?"

Elizabeth pondered the question, her mind racing through scenarios. "I think just being there for YN is the most important thing. As for Alexander, I... I don't know. I hope he'll see reason, that he'll understand that what YN needs right now is support, not more stress."

The talk turned to plans for supporting YN, discussing shifts to stay with her, bringing items from home that might comfort her, and how to handle visits. They also planned to gather some personal messages and well-wishes from friends, compiling them into a scrapbook for YN to see when she was better.

As they spoke, Elizabeth felt a slight easing of the tension in her shoulders. This, at least, was something concrete, something positive they could do in a situation where so much felt out of their control.

The meeting ended with a group hug, a little awkward over the cafeteria table, but necessary. They parted ways, a plan in place, each carrying a little of the others' strength with them.

Returning to YN's room, Elizabeth felt better knowing that she wasn't alone in this.
