Chapter 4

Ziggy

Floor 4

I scream, hearing my vocal cords snap and stretch in my throat, but I don't care. I rush to the broken body of Goob, refusing to believe he's dead. He's not dead, he's not.

"Goob... wake up!"

I mutter, pulling out my medkit. Rule number one of a crisis. Don't panic, you'll only make it worse. With shaking hands, I pull out a bandage and alcohol. Goddamn it, where's Sprout when you need him?

"It's too late."

I hear an empty voice behind me. Bonnie is sitting there, eyes as dead as Goob's. I recognize the expression on her face, because I see it every morning when I wake up. She's trying not to cry.

There's 15 seconds on the elevator now. Ruby comes in and gasps, falling to Goob's side. "No no no no no no..." she mutters "I can fix this..." Ruby looks at me with so much shattered hope that I almost break.

I shake my head ever so slightly. It's a small gesture, but it breaks Ruby. She falls to the ground, sobbing in her hands. I just stand there, numb. I can't break, not when people need me.

Glisten, Shrimpo, and Vee come in next. Glisten wails and spins to me. "WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?" he demands. "HELP HIM?" I open my mouth, expecting words to come out of it, but words fail me. Glisten makes a croaking noise and sits down next to Ruby, murmuring words to her. Vee sits down next to me, checking Goob's heartbeat, before sitting back down, shaking her head. Mains need to get over grief quickly. Vee has always been the best at it, but even she couldn't hold in tears sometimes, like now, glistening green ones in her screen. Glisten is still comforting Ruby, his tears on his mirror-face making little rainbows. I know it should be me doing that, but there was still one person left. The one person who would be the most affected.

She grapples in, and I suppose the crowd of toons around Goob's body conceals the truth, so she just turns to me with amusement in her gaze.

"Uh, what's happening?" She says. "And where's Goob? There's like, 5 seconds left."

For a split second, I wish we could somehow hide Goob from her. I haven't broken yet, but if Scraps broke, I would soon after.

That thought is ridiculous though, because Scraps deserves to know. Ruby and Glisten move away, showing the corpse.

Scraps doesn't scream. She walks forward slowly, her tail hovering over the ground. "Goob?" She asks, her voice tiny. "GOOB!" She rushes to the ground and shakes the body. "GOOB, WAKE UP! WAKE UP!" Her always-steady voice cracks on the last words as she buries her head in the ichor-stained fur. She cries, the tears flowing across Goob's fur and the floor. I don't remember crying, but I am now, sitting beside Goob, hoping and praying that this is all a dream and I'll wake up and i'll murder astro and maybe none of this happened maybe this is all a simulation and maybe-

I take a deep breath. Breathe.

Breathe.

Breathe.

Breathe.

              Brethea.

                             Brtha

                                                                                                 atheBre

My arms are around Scraps now, careful not to crush her. From my blurry vision, I can see Ruby still crying, Glisten, Bonnie, and Vee are carrying the body to the other side of the elevator, where we put all the ones we've... lost. That particular area is stained with black ichor, and no one ever bothers to clean it. Maybe it's because we still want a part of the lost one to stay with us. Shrimpo is in the corner, looking mad as ever. For a second, I want to kill him.

I easily could I should kill him why wouldn't I kill him no one likes him he's just a stupid- My vision tints red for a second, my daisy flower crown turning into a wreath of poison ivy. That happened sometimes when I was upset. The ichor in me took over and began my transformation. I need to be more careful. The next floor is almost starting, so I help Scraps up, her tears pretty much drying up by now.

Ruby, Glisten, and Bonnie look okay. Their eyes, filled with despair just moments ago were filled with DETERMINATION. I clear my throat, my voice still raspy from the scream, and try to project as loud as possible.

"FOR GOOB!"

Everyone repeats my cheer. Everyone but the shrimp in the corner.
