"Kiara"
I was checking one last time that the guitar and the bass were tuned correctly. I turned around abruptly.
"Deaky told me he's waiting for you in the back. I don't know what he wants to say exactly," Brian finished the sentence.
"Oh, okay. Thanks, Bri," I said.
He nodded at me, heading under the stage to put on his dress for their performance.
I, on the other hand, headed towards the back: BohRhap had been one of the first bands to perform. And their song wasn't bad at all, I had to admit. Queen were last on the bill. They seemed very happy about that: they would have more time to get ready.
Nancy and Fred were probably doing... um... the things that couples do. Is that called... cuddling? Rachel was helping Brian get ready, carefully combing his hair. Jessie was enjoying the music with Roger.
And I... well...
I should have said something a little unexpected to Deacon.
He was actually waiting for me in the back, leaning against their van. He had on a very elegant white shirt, simple but effective. He was looking at the sky, absorbed in his thoughts. His hair, long and soft, fell along his shoulders.
Those were the moments that reminded me how beautiful he was.
"Are you worried about later?" I asked, surprising him.
He turned quickly, smiling at me.
"Mhhh... Nah. That's not the thing that worries me the most right now."
He reached out across the van, signaling me to come over to him.
"What's worrying you?" I asked, moving next to him, leaning against the van.
He sighed. Looking into my eyes.
"Tomorrow is your birthday. And I didn't even get you a present."
I raised my eyebrows.
"How did you know?"
"Nancy told me about it. It doesn't matter who told me anyway, I'm so stupid I didn't think to buy you anything!" he complained to me.
I laughed, hugging Deacon.
I looked at him.
"You're the best gift I could ever get," I told him.
He, in about two seconds, had his hand on my back and pulled me towards him. He brought his mouth close to mine, smiling mischievously.
"Where did the Kiara I knew go?" he asked.
I sighed.
"She's still here. She just fell in love with this amazing guy..." I said.
I let the sentence hang in the air. Deacon was waiting for a conclusion.
I had to tell him. I couldn't keep it a secret. He could easily get hurt and leave me, sure. But I wanted him to know the truth.
I took a deep breath, closing my eyes.
"A great guy who, if he wants, can be even more," I concluded.
He pulled away from me for a moment. He looked at me confused.
"What do you mean?"
I looked at the floor.
I unzipped my pocket and slowly took out the contents.
"Deacon..."
I showed him the positive pregnancy test.
"We... are not two now."
I promised myself I would never look at his reaction. But I couldn't help but look at him.
He was still. He was staring first at the test and then at me, his expression unreadable.
He took the test from my hand and looked at it more closely, as if that could change. He read the writing I don't know how many times, before slowly collapsing to the floor and looking up at the sky again.
I bent down too, getting closer.
"Fuck... Say something, please," I begged.
He looked into my eyes.
"How could I do something like this to you?"
He asked me this question in a weak voice. His eyes became glossy and a tear ran down his cheek.
"What are you-" I tried to say.
"We are only 16 and 18, Kiara..." he interrupted me in a firm but weak voice.
He was delirious: he was looking at me with dilated pupils. He was shaking like a leaf. I had never seen him like that. I put my hands on his shoulders.
"Deac-"
"How can you be so stupid not to notice that you don't have protection?!"
"JOHN" I called him.
I sighed, while he tried to remain calm.
"Listen to me: I noticed right away that you didn't put anything on" I announced, calmly.
He raised his eyebrows, even more confused than before.
"What?!"
"You got it right. I didn't say anything because I wasn't afraid that this could happen... I could have stopped you but I didn't. Because I'm okay with it. Do you understand?"
Deacon looked more bewildered and confused than before.
"You... would accept the fact of having a child at 16, Kiara?" he asked as he came closer to me.
I smiled at him, taking his hands.
"Yes, Deacon. Even more so considering that you're the father" I announced.
"Now, though, I need to know if you're happy about it too" I added at the end.
The boy stood up and stood up. I did the same, before he grabbed me from behind, bringing me as close to him as possible.
I wiped away his tears. The usual idiot smile appeared on his face. He placed a hand on my stomach.
"I'm the happiest man on this earth, Kiara. I'm happy because someone will be able to call me dad. I'm happy because my children will have an amazing mother. I'm happy because... you are amazing"
"I love you asshole. Or maybe... I love you assdad"
Thrid Kiss of my life.
