Lauren worked through her break to get caught up with her work. She ignored all conversations around her to finish before the end of the day. She did not want to walk home. Lauren's car was in the shop. Someone had damaged it while it sat on the street outside her home. Alice and Mindy said it was Jason's fault because she avoided him. He wanted her destitute and needing his help.Lauren sighed and sat back in her chair. She had finished the most comprehensive file for Mr. Parker first and was still on track to finish at 5 pm. The three other files were smaller and for Gary, their manager.
A rumble from her stomach made her reach for her purse. "I'm going to lunch, Alice."
"Okay,"
Lauren pushed her chair back and then stood. She walked away from her cubicle toward the lunchroom.
Trace worked outside the lunchroom, changing the garbage bags in the trash cans. He liked the loneliness of his job and stayed out of trouble being alone. The only people who kept in contact with him from his gang days were Norvi and Michael. The Demons' leader, Norvi, went to jail for four years, but Michael escaped prosecution.
Trace took a handful of bags and walked into the lunchroom. He had removed the top of the can, pulled out the bag, and placed it on the ground beside the can. Lauren walked into the room, and Trace looked up and saw her.
Lauren Caulley's dark eyes roamed over the tattoos on his arms and neck as if they would leave the next time she saw him. Even though he was sure Jason and others told her he was racist, she always spoke to him. He had a prejudice against assholes. He could not help that if most of them at the time happened to be black.
Lauren looked at his rugged face. Most of the women in the office considered him attractive, and Lauren did, too. His aloof attitude made him mysterious to her.
"How is your day going so far?" Her eyes quickly moved away from his as he continued staring at her. Trace watched her scurry away from him like a mouse.
