We run for days, slipping through forests, rivers, anywhere we can find cover. The dragon kingdom's lands stretch far and wide, but with Y/N by my side, every step feels lighter, like a weight I didn't realize I'd been carrying has finally fallen away. As we put distance between us and the kingdom, the sense of danger starts to fade. But I know the threat isn't over. Not yet. It's late one night, beneath a sky scattered with stars, when we finally stop to rest. We've made it beyond the reach of the castle guards, and though my body aches, I feel something I haven't felt in years: peace. Y/N sits beside me, staring up at the stars, her face lit by the gentle glow of moonlight. For a moment, we're just two people under the same sky, free from the rules and expectations of our worlds.
"This... all of this..." I begin, glancing at her. "It feels like a dream. Like maybe when I wake up, I'll still be trapped back in the castle."
She turns to me, her eyes bright with a determination that makes my chest tighten. "If it is a dream," she says, her voice soft, "then let's make it one we never wake from."
I reach out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. She's here, with me, and I realize that's all that matters. "What do we do now?" I ask, the question lingering in the air between us.
Her gaze holds mine, and I can see the answer in her eyes. "We find somewhere safe," she says. "Somewhere no one will think to look for us. A place where we can start over."
The thought of starting fresh, away from the kingdom and its demands, fills me with a quiet kind of hope. "I know just the place," I murmur, an old memory surfacing-a secluded valley, hidden away in the mountains where even the dragons seldom venture.
Together, we make our way there, taking days to climb the rugged slopes until, finally, we reach the valley's edge. It's even more breathtaking than I remember. Nestled between the peaks, the valley stretches out in a sea of wildflowers and rivers that sparkle under the sun.
Y/N takes it all in, her eyes wide with awe. "It's beautiful," she whispers.
"This... this could be home," I say, unable to keep the wonder from my voice. It feels right, like this place was always meant for us. Here, we're beyond the reach of both kingdoms-far from the boundaries that kept us apart.
The weeks that follow are the most peaceful of my life. We build a small cabin near the river, learning to live off the land, and each day, I feel myself letting go of the weight I carried for so long. I start to see the world through Y/N's eyes, finding beauty in the smallest things-a bloom of wildflowers, the song of a bird at dawn, the warmth of her smile as we sit by the fire at night.
As we settle into our new life, word of us slowly fades from the kingdom. News from outside is rare, but I hear whispers from travelers who pass nearby. The kingdom is still searching for me, but their efforts have dwindled, and peace talks with the elves have begun. Maybe, in time, they'll forget. Maybe, someday, the kingdom will learn to look beyond the old hatred that kept us apart.
One evening, as the sun dips low, I pull Y/N close, her laughter bright against the backdrop of our quiet valley. "You know," I murmur, pressing my forehead against hers, "I never thought I'd find something worth giving up a kingdom for. But now, I can't imagine anything else."
She smiles up at me, her eyes full of the warmth and love that kept me going all this time. "Neither can I," she whispers.
And so, we stay in the valley, hidden away in our quiet corner of the world. It's not the life I was raised for, not the life I ever expected-but it's ours, and that's more than I ever thought I'd have.
Bound by fire and fate, we found a place beyond the world's reach, and there, we built our forever.
