The moment I see that lieutenant's smug face, the rage hits me, sharp and unrestrained. He stands there, flanked by guards, all of them looking at us like we're nothing more than pests to be squashed. The sight of him alone is enough to make my blood boil, but seeing Y/N beside me, standing tall despite the danger, brings something even stronger to the surface-protectiveness, fierce, and unyielding.
I clench my fists, stepping in front of her, instinct kicking in. "Get out of our way," I snarl, daring him to take a step closer. I don't care about their titles, or the fact that every guard here answers to my father. All I care about is getting Y/N to safety.
The lieutenant chuckles, a low, condescending sound. "Look at you, the dragon prince, running off with an elf," he sneers. "You're a disgrace to the kingdom."
His words scrape at my pride, but I shove the feeling down. There's no time for pride right now. Only survival. I glance over at Y/N, seeing the fierce determination in her eyes. She's scared, I can tell, but she's ready to fight. I didn't expect her to come for me-didn't dare to hope. And yet, here she is, defying every rule, every danger. For me.
That's enough to make my decision. We're getting out of here, no matter what.
Without a word, I give Y/N's hand a quick squeeze. "When I say run, go," I murmur, low enough for only her to hear. Her eyes widen, but she nods, understanding. She knows the risks. But she's willing to take them anyway.
The lieutenant steps closer, crossing his arms with a smug look. "You're coming back with us, Bakugo. Or would you rather watch what we'll do to her once you're gone?"
The threat hits me like a punch to the gut, my vision tunneling. I can't let them lay a finger on her. But I don't let my anger show-I force myself to smirk, letting the lieutenant think he's won, just for a second. "You're gonna regret saying that," I say coolly.
Then, with a surge of energy, I throw a ball of fire straight at his feet, sending him and the guards scattering back. "Now, Y/N! Go!" I shout, grabbing her hand and pulling her along as we sprint into the thick of the forest.
Branches whip against our faces as we tear through the trees, dodging fallen logs and ducking under low-hanging limbs. I can hear the guards' shouts fading behind us, but I know they won't give up. They'll hunt us, especially now that we've defied them so openly. I glance over at Y/N, who's keeping pace, her gaze set with fierce determination. There's no fear-just the same stubborn resolve that brought her here.
We race deeper into the woods until the sounds of pursuit become faint, nothing more than echoes lost among the trees. I slow to a stop, catching my breath, and pull Y/N close, scanning the shadows around us. The trees are thick here, twisted branches forming a canopy that blocks most of the light. If we stay low, we might be able to evade them.
I keep my voice low as I speak. "We need to move fast. They'll search every inch of this forest if they have to."
She nods, but I can see the concern in her eyes. "You're bleeding," she whispers, reaching toward my arm where a branch left a jagged scratch during our escape.
"It's nothing," I say, brushing it off. I don't have time to worry about a scratch. All I can focus on is keeping her safe. "Y/N...why did you come for me?" My voice softens, barely louder than a breath. "You could have been captured, hurt, or worse. Why would you take that risk?"
She holds my gaze, her E/C eyes steady. "Because you would have done the same for me," she replies simply. Her voice trembles slightly, but there's no hesitation, no regret.
I feel my chest tighten, a mixture of gratitude and something deeper, something I can't quite name. I'd do anything to protect her, but knowing she feels the same-it shakes me to my core. I thought I'd lost her, thought that maybe she'd turn back and let me handle my own mess. But she's here, against all odds, standing by me in a way no one ever has.
I pull her into a tight embrace, not caring if it's reckless or if we're wasting precious time. She's warm and real in my arms, and for a second, everything else fades away-the guards, the kingdom, the entire damned world.
"I don't deserve this," I whisper against her hair. "I don't deserve you."
She pulls back just enough to look up at me, her gaze unwavering. "Maybe you don't. But I'm not letting you go," she says, a soft smile touching her lips. And in that moment, I can feel something in me crack open, something I'd been holding back for too long.
Before I can think twice, I lean down, closing the distance between us, and kiss her. It's fierce, raw, filled with every unspoken word I couldn't bring myself to say. She melts into me, her fingers curling into my shirt as I hold her close, the world around us disappearing.
When we finally pull apart, we're both breathless, and for once, I don't care about the consequences. I don't care that my family will hunt us, that the kingdom would never allow this. In this moment, all that matters is her.
But the sound of rustling in the distance snaps us back to reality, and I step back reluctantly, my mind shifting back into survival mode. "We should keep moving," I say, my voice rough, though I can't help the small, genuine smile that pulls at my lips.
Y/N nods, though her fingers linger on mine for just a moment longer. "Together?" she asks, her voice steady but filled with hope.
"Together," I reply, my voice filled with a conviction I haven't felt in years.
No matter what lies ahead, I know one thing for certain: I'm never letting her go again.
