Fahad paced nervously in his room. He tugged at his collar, a bead of sweat trickling down his temple. Today was the day. The day his life would take a different route.
"Do I look presentable?" Fahad asked his older sister, Mahira. "There's nothing missing, right?"
"You look perfect!" Mahira assured him.
"Thanks, sis," Fahad gave her a quick hug. "I should go now."
"So you're not going to tell me where you're going to?" Mahira asked, lifting her brows. "You're all dressed up. This is like the first time I've seen you this particular about your looks. Even little Emaan who's nonchalant noticed it. You've been like this for the past few days. What's going on?"
A smile spread across Fahad's lips. "I'll tell you when I get back."
Mahira shook her head in disagreement, her eyes narrowed. "You're not passing through this door until you tell me what's up. Is it a girl?"
Hesitantly, Fahad nodded. He didn't know how they'd take the news. Especially his older sister. She had been so understanding towards him despite everything...
Mahira gasped. "No way!"
Fahad nodded slowly. "I met someone."
"Oh, wow!" Mahira breathed, walking closer to him. "Who is she? When did you meet her? And how serious are you? Does Dad know? Forget Dad for a second, does Mom even know?"
Fahad heaved a deep sigh. "No one knows, Mahira, okay? No one knows yet. I didn't tell anyone because I didn't think anything serious would come out of the relationship."
"But now?" She pressed, curiosity glistening in her eyes.
"She's amazing. I truly," he gulped. "I sincerely like her, and I want to marry her."
Mahira remained silent for a few seconds. "Are you sure, Fahad? How long have you known this woman?"
"Long enough to know that she's the one I want to spend the rest of my life with, Mahira. I'm serious. I have never met someone so pure, so driven and intelligent as Najah. Her beauty is just an added bonus."
Fahad had never believed in love at first sight. But when he'd first laid his eyes on her, it was as if a butterfly had flapped its wings in his heart, setting off a chain of emotions he hadn't felt in years.
"How long?" Mahira asked again.
"Eight months," Fahad replied.
"So you're planning on asking her to marry you today?"
Fahad nodded slowly. "I am."
"Judging by how you speak of her, I can tell you like her like you said, but are you sure she feels the same way about you?"
Fahad paused for a second. The question Mahira asked for a very valid one. A very important one. He had only known Najah for eight months, as he wanted, they started off as friends, but as the days passed by, they connected impressively well. Najah had become so comfortable around him. Although she hadn't said it to him, he could feel she liked him too. The late night chats and the days spent together were the signs he needed to conclude. "She does. I'm sure."
"Does she also know about—" Mahira began but Fahad cut her off abruptly, his heart pounding in his chest.
"Mahira! Don't mention it."
