chapter  thirteen

Jackson roared down the desolate stretch of road, the heavy metal music blaring through the speakers so loudly that it rattled the windows of his sleek Porsche. The sound pulsed in time with his adrenaline, drowning out everything else—especially the sputtering engine that hinted at trouble. The exhilarating rush of speed was intoxicating, but as he felt the car's power begin to fade, panic seeped in. He tapped the brakes lightly, his heart racing as the car began to lose momentum, gripping the wheel with both hands to keep it from yanking away from him. The once smooth ride transformed into a struggle as the Porsche coasted off the asphalt and onto the grassy shoulder, finally lurching to a dead stop.

With frustration boiling over, Jackson turned the key in the ignition repeatedly, but all he got in response was a useless clicking sound. Each attempt felt like a nail in the coffin of his plans. He slammed the door shut behind him, the force echoing in the eerie silence that surrounded him. "Son of a bitch," he muttered under his breath, the words feeling heavy in the air. As he walked around to the back of the car, irritation gave way to an unsettling realization: the odd quietness that enveloped him. No houses were in sight, no other vehicles traversing the road—just him and the vast emptiness.

Opening the rear engine compartment, Jackson peered inside, but like most people faced with car trouble, he stared at the complex machinery, utterly dumbfounded. Nothing seemed out of place, and yet everything was wrong. Just as he reached to close the compartment, a noise pulled him from his thoughts: the unmistakable sound of another vehicle approaching. He straightened, a mix of hope and apprehension washing over him.

A familiar SUV pulled to the shoulder behind his Porsche, the engine rumbling to a stop. Jackson's eyes narrowed as Argent stepped out, a friendly smile on his face that felt almost out of place in the stark landscape. The contrast of Argent's easy demeanor against Jackson's frustration made the moment feel surreal. With a sigh of relief, Jackson met his gaze, wondering what the hell he was going to say to the man who seemed to appear just when he needed help the most.
