"Joel! What are you doing?"

The little black dog had bit a hole into my scarf.

"I kept my promise, bud. I brought you food."

But Joel just kept staring up at me with big eyes. I went through my blonde hair with both my hands and glanced at the door.

A 'Beth' was supposed to be here in about thirty minutes. Daphne had talked about her too earlier. She was the one that had told her about me.

I wondered how many other teenagers lived here. What if Daphne was the only one?

Joel, in the meantime, let go of my scarf and laid down in my lap.

Back when I had found him on that old scrapyard he had been nothing but a frightened, starved animal. I could have never left him there.

Brandon had yelled at me for bringing him. He'd said that Joel would only get us in trouble. In his eyes the poor puppy was just another mouth to fill and a risk.

I expected the same reaction from the people here in Eldham.

Everything about my young companion was dark and black. I was the complete opposite. Shiny blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin. I liked that about us.

Since he ate the banana Wes gave me I hadn't had any breakfast yet. My stomach was growling.

There weren't many belongings I could have collected so for the next minutes I just sat in the middle of the chamber, waiting for Beth.

"Is that all you have with you?" The blonde beauty asked me.

Beth couldn't be much older than twenty years. She had a nice voice and a pretty face.

"Yeah, that's it. Rick took my weapons away." All but one.

A nod. "Do you need help carrying your backpack?"

"No, no I don't. Thanks though."

Joel was laying in there and if she picked it up she would definitely notice something.

I quickly changed the topic. "Where will I be sleeping?"

She started walking down the stairs and I followed her.

"Since having a whole house to yourself would be a little over the top, you'll share it with me, my sister Maggie and her husband."

Her sister must've been a little older than her if she had a husband.

"But what about your parents? Don't they wanna live with you?"

Beth didn't reply for a moment, then she shot me a sad look.

I tried to say sorry with my eyes and it looked like she got what I wanted to tell her.

"My apologies for the mess." Beth chuckled. "We didn't expect you."

I had got the small room next to their kitchen. Other than a mattress, a cupboard and a candle there was just paper and dust on the floor.

Good enough.

"Thanks Beth."

"You're welcome. And just so you know dinner will be at six. It's when the guards change their shifts. There's a clock over the front door."
"Breakfast and lunch are up to ourselves but you gotta be there for dinner because Rick will introduce you to the others."

"Oh." I was lost in my own thoughts.

"It's what we do for every newcomer. Enjoy it while it's still there."
