It's another chilly morning, and I'm already bored. Krisha and Dhruv are off at that debate competition, leaving me completely alone. Today was our open house too, and guess what? I failed math again. My dad went to the parent-teacher meeting, but, of course, he didn't bother to tell me what they discussed.

At lunch, I sat with a few girls from college, mostly Krisha's friends. As always, it started with the usual gossip.

Sanika leaned in with excitement. "Did you hear about Sneha?"

I glanced up, curious. "What about her?"

"Sneha rejected Aagnish!" she said.

My heart skipped a beat. Aagnish?

Rhea said, rolling her eyes. "Yeah, poor guy. He thought he had a chance."

That's why he was quiet yesterday, I thought, piecing it together. He had seemed off, distant even, but now I knew why.

I tried to act casual, but my mind was reeling.

Sanika turned to me, raising an eyebrow. "Wait, did you notice that? Someone's paying attention."

I quickly shook my head. "No, I mean, just... surprised. I didn't expect that." I forced a small laugh, trying to brush it off.

But inside, I felt a weird pang. I had a crush on Aagnish all along, but hearing about his rejection didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. Maybe what I felt for him was not as deep as I had imagined. Still, there was a slight disappointment.

Later, in my room...

I was mindlessly playing chess when my mom barged in

I was mindlessly playing chess when my mom barged in.

"Kayra! What's with these marks, huh? How many times do I have to tell you to focus on your studies?" she snapped. "Do you really think you can pass like this? How are you planning to get into medical college with grades like these? And that computer class—don't think I don't know it's just an excuse to avoid studying."
