Our breaths came out ragged and uneven, a mix of exhaustion and sheer willpower. The shadows that had haunted us through every corridor now pressed even closer, like a living wall determined to hold us back. The whispers continued to claw at our minds, desperate, almost pleading: Don’t go… you belong here…
But we were so close.
Lyn moved ahead, his steps determined yet wary, scanning the walls with his night vision. Sera gripped my arm tightly, her breaths shallow, as though afraid that releasing her grip might pull her back into that endless darkness.
"Come on," I urged, leading us forward as I felt a faint, cold breeze brush against my face—the unmistakable sign of open air. Somewhere ahead was freedom, the end of this nightmare. I focused on that thought, forcing every other sound and fear out of my mind.
Suddenly, Lyn paused, pointing toward a faint outline at the end of the corridor. There it was—a steel door, slightly ajar, with a faint glimmer of moonlight filtering through.
"That's our way out," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, as if afraid speaking louder would awaken whatever horrors lay in the walls around us.
We quickened our pace, hearts pounding louder than the whispers that clung to us. With each step, the air grew fresher, the oppressive weight of the facility starting to peel away. We reached the door, and without a second thought, I pushed it open, feeling the cold rush of night air fill my lungs.
For a moment, we just stood there, breathing in the open sky, letting the coolness of the world outside wash over us. Above, stars glittered in an endless expanse, each one a reminder of the freedom we had almost lost.
Lyn glanced back at the facility, a faint shiver running through him. "We made it," he said, disbelief mingling with relief.
Sera managed a shaky smile, her eyes wide and distant, as though she couldn't fully grasp the reality of our escape. "It's over," she whispered.
As we stepped out into the open field beyond the facility, the whispers finally faded, dissolving into the silence of the night. There were no alarms, no guards, no final obstacles—only the soft rustling of leaves and the faint glow of dawn beginning to creep over the horizon.
We walked together, side by side, feeling the ground beneath our feet as something real and solid after so much time spent in fear and darkness. The weight lifted from our shoulders, and for the first time in what felt like ages, we allowed ourselves to breathe freely.
With each step away from the facility, the memories of the twisted corridors and the haunting voices began to fade, replaced by the vast, open sky and the promise of a new beginning. The nightmare was behind us, but we knew its shadows would linger in our minds, a reminder of what we had endured… and survived.
But as we moved further into the light, one thought stood out above all else: We were free.
