The evening was a blend of soft music, murmured conversations, and the warm, golden glow of chandeliers casting light over the spacious hall.
Sung Y/n, as usual, sat alone, perfectly poised and detached in a quiet corner. With her phone in hand, she was reading emails and reviewing a few case notes that had piled up over the week.
It was easier to stay busy, to appear occupied; especially at social gatherings that held little meaning for her
But then, her solitude was interrupted.
"Uh... excuse me?"
She glanced up slowly, a touch of irritation flickering in her eyes before quickly fading into her usual cold, unreadable expression.
Standing before her was a young man with dark hair, he had dark hair, a neat suit, and an expression that combined curiosity with a hint of shyness.
"Sorry if I... startled you," he mumbled, the faintest blush on his cheeks.
His gaze flickered between her and the floor, as if he were still debating whether or not to approach her.
"I was, uh, wondering if maybe I could sit here?"
Y/n's gaze sharpened. "There are other seats available," she said, her tone devoid of warmth but not exactly rude.
A flicker of embarrassment crossed his face, he hesitated, a touch of disappointment crossing his features
But he nodded, a little nervous. "Yeah, I know," he replied, almost whispering now.
"It's just that... I don't really know anyone here, and, well... you looked... approachable?"
Approachable? That was new. Most people wouldn't describe her that way. Still, she allowed him to sit, if only to prevent further awkwardness.
She didn't respond, but he took that as an invitation and sat down, his posture a mix of eagerness and anxiety. "I'm Kim Taehyung, by the way," he said, glancing at her with a shy smile. "I work at the city gallery as an art curator."
Y/n offered a noncommittal nod, glancing down at her phone. "An art curator," she repeated, her voice as neutral as ever. "Interesting."
"Thanks!" he said, his voice lifting a bit as he seemed to gather a little confidence. "It's not as serious as being a lawyer, though. I guess I just... like organizing things and showcasing artists' work. I just, well, organize exhibitions!! "
"It's still work," she replied simply. She had intended to sound polite, but her flat tone may have come off as dismissive.
His faint smile faded a little, and she felt a pang of regret; something she rarely experienced when talking to strangers.
An awkward silence settled between them until Taehyung tried again, his voice softer now. "Do you, uh... enjoy being a lawyer?"
She hesitated, surprised he'd asked. "It's fulfilling," she answered after a moment, giving him a little more than she usually would. "Though it can be... consuming."
He nodded, his gaze thoughtful. "It sounds like it. My sister is in law school... says she never has time for herself anymore." His voice was sincere, almost shy, and he smiled faintly as he glanced at her, his eyes lighting up just a little.
Y/n kept her expression neutral. "It's the nature of the job."
"Right," Taehyung agreed, his voice trailing off again. He seemed to wrestle with himself before trying once more. "You seem... really capable, you know? Like you handle everything well."
His gaze met hers briefly before darting away, and she noticed a faint blush on his cheeks again.
"Thanks," she said, surprised by his compliment but not quite sure how to respond.
His shyness was different- there was a confidence mixed with his introversion, a certain charm that kept her from dismissing him entirely, the moment hung in the air.
He didn't push for more, and Y/n expected him to leave, maybe realizing she wasn't someone who made small talk or shared easily. But he stayed.
"Um... I know we just met, but I was wondering if, uh..." He stumbled over his words, rubbing the back of his neck nervously, his eyes avoiding hers.
"Would you maybe... want to see the gallery sometime? If you're, you know... interested in art."
Y/n studied him for a long moment, considering his offer. He wasn't persistent in a way that annoyed her, but rather seemed... earnest, and a little unsure of himself.
He wasn't the type she'd usually make time for. But something about his quiet sincerity, his subtle blushes and nervousness, made her pause.
"We'll see," she said finally, leaving her response deliberately vague.
Taehyung's eyes lit up just a bit, though he tried to mask it, nodding with a faint smile. "Alright," he murmured, looking away with that same shy, endearing demeanor that seemed to contradict his earlier boldness in approaching her.
Just as Y/n was about to return to her phone, a voice called across the room, drawing everyone's attention.
It was one of the event organizers, announcing a round of toasts and introductions between families.
Y/n's eyes flicked to the stage where the speaker stood, and then she heard it, a name that caught her off guard.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we're thrilled to welcome the Kim's and Sung's tonight, two families looking forward to a very promising union."
Y/n felt her heart skip a beat. She looked back at Taehyung, who seemed equally startled, his eyes widening with realization.
"Wait... you're... Sung Y/n?" he asked softly, his voice a mixture of confusion and realization.
Y/n nodded, her calm demeanor beginning to slip. "Yes," she replied, her mind racing.
I... didn't know..." he started, then faltered, a mix of confusion and intrigue crossing his features. "So, we...?"
"Yes," she interrupted, trying to regain some composure. "It seems our families have plans we weren't aware of."
"Great, just what I need," Taehyung murmured, running a hand through his hair, his expression shifting from surprise to something more contemplative.
Y/n swallowed, the uncertainty of the situation swirling around them.
"I guess we'll have to figure this out together," she said, her voice steadier now, though the hint of apprehension lingered.
Taehyung met her gaze again, this time with a mix of curiosity and determination.
"Together," he echoed, his cheeks darkened as he put the pieces together, and she could see the same thought forming in his mind, the truth seemed unmistakably clear.
Their parents had set this up.
And with that single, silent revelation, Y/n realized her life was about to become far more complicated than she'd planned.
