Y/n shut the front door behind her with a soft click, releasing a sigh that had been trapped in her chest all night. The conversation with Taehyung replayed in her mind, every look and word pulling at the tension in her body.
She dropped her purse on the table, running a hand through her hair. "Why am I even thinking about this?" she muttered, shaking her head. The cold, familiar walls of her apartment felt like a safe haven, but tonight, they seemed too quiet.
A sudden knock on the door made her heart jump. Her eyes darted to the clock-it was late, too late for a casual visitor. Frowning, she approached the door cautiously and peered through the peephole.
Taehyung stood outside, his posture stiff, hands deep in the pockets of his coat. He looked hesitant, almost as if he was reconsidering being there at all.
Y/n hesitated, her fingers hovering over the handle. What was he doing here? They had barely finished that awkward meeting at the restaurant. Finally, she unlocked the door and opened it just enough to look at him.
"Taehyung?" Her voice was guarded, a thin line between surprise and irritation.
He nodded slightly, eyes flicking up to meet hers for just a moment before darting away again. "I'm sorry for coming unannounced. Your parents...they thought we should talk again. Just to... make sure things are clear."
She blinked, the surprise settling into annoyance. Of course, their families wouldn't leave things alone. She opened the door wider but didn't invite him in. "It's late. Couldn't this wait?"
He shifted uncomfortably, the tip of his shoes scraping the floor. "I didn't want to come either," he admitted, voice so low she almost didn't catch it. "But they insisted."
The honesty in his voice took some of the edge off her frustration. With a resigned sigh, she stepped back. "Come in. But I'm not promising this conversation will change anything."
Taehyung nodded and stepped inside, eyes flicking around her living room as if he felt out of place. He stood by the entrance, hands still in his pockets, not moving further until she motioned to the couch.
"You can sit," she said, arms crossing as she stayed standing.
He sat down gingerly, the silence between them thickening. His eyes stayed on his knees, fingers fidgeting with the seam of his coat.
"So, what do they expect us to talk about?" Y/n finally said, her voice cutting through the quiet.
Taehyung looked up at her, then down again, his brows furrowing. "They didn't say much. Just... to see how you felt after tonight."
Y/n scoffed lightly, taking a seat across from him. "How I felt?" She leaned back, eyes narrowing. "What did they think would happen? That we'd magically decide we're perfect for each other?"
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips, a mix of irony and understanding. "Probably," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Y/n's eyes softened at that, only for a moment before she steeled herself again. "I don't know what they expect, but I'm not changing my mind."
"I know," Taehyung replied, finally meeting her gaze. His eyes were dark and reflective, as if holding thoughts he wouldn't dare voice. "And I'm not here to convince you."
The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard. She studied him, searching for any sign of pretense, but found none. He wasn't here to push or plead; he was just here because, like her, he had no choice.
"So, why did you really come?" she pressed, unable to shake her curiosity.
He hesitated, his fingers pausing their fidgeting. "Because... I wanted to show that I'm not trying to make this harder. I know you don't want this. I'm just here because... well, I'm supposed to be."
Y/n felt her defenses waver, but she pushed the feeling down. She couldn't afford to let herself believe he was any different from the expectations surrounding them. "Right," she said curtly, looking away. "So, what now? We just sit here and pretend to have a conversation?"
Taehyung's lips parted slightly, then closed again, as if he was debating whether to speak. "We don't have to pretend anything. I don't talk much anyway," he said, a hint of nervous humor in his tone.
Y/n couldn't help the small smirk that pulled at her lips, despite herself. "I noticed," she said dryly.
A hint of color rose to his cheeks, and he looked down, the corner of his mouth twitching as if he wanted to smile but didn't dare.
Y/n shifted, suddenly aware of how the conversation was treading into unfamiliar, vulnerable territory.
Before she could steer them back to safer ground, a loud knock at the door startled both of them.
They exchanged a glance, the unspoken question in the air: "Who could that be at this hour?"
"I'll get it," Y/n said, pushing herself up, but Taehyung was already on edge, eyes trained on the door as if it held an answer he was afraid to find out.
As she reached for the handle, another knock, louder this time, reverberated through the room. Y/n's pulse quickened, an uneasy feeling settling in her chest.
"Who is it?" she called, her voice steady but laced with tension.
No answer.
Taehyung stood, his expression serious now, watching her every move. The room felt colder, the silence more ominous as she hesitated before opening the door a crack.
The figure outside was obscured by shadows, but a voice called out, low and urgent: "Y/n, open up. We need to talk."
The voice was familiar, but the tone sent a shiver down her spine. She glanced back at Taehyung, whose eyes were wide with concern. He stepped closer, still keeping his distance, as if ready to move if needed.
"Y/n?" The voice outside called again, this time with more impatience. The chapter ends with her fingers gripping the edge of the door, heart pounding as she prepared to face whatever was waiting for her on the other side.
