Y/n's fingers tightened around the door hand as the silence stretched, heavy and unnerving. She glanced back at Taehyung, who stood by the couch, his expression unreadable but his posture tense.
The knock came again, sharper this time, and it pulled her focus back to the door.
"Y/n, are you okay?" Taehyung's voice was quiet, but there was concern in it.
It caught her off guard; he rarely spoke up first. She gave him a small nod before pulling the door open.
Standing there was none other than Kylie, her best friend, with eyes wide and slightly frantic.
"Y/n, thank goodness you're still up," she said, not waiting for an invitation as she pushed her way in.
"Kylie?" Y/n stepped aside, bewildered by her sudden entrance. She noticed Kylie's gaze shift to Taehyung, taking in his presence with a curious lift of her brow.
"Oh, sorry, am I interrupting something?" Kylie's tone was teasing but had an undercurrent of urgency.
Taehyung looked down, the tips of his ears turning pink as he shook his head. "I should probably leave," he said softly, starting to step toward the door.
"No," Y/n said more firmly than she intended, causing both Kylie and Taehyung to look at her. She cleared her throat, crossing her arms.
"It's fine. Kylie, what's going on? Why are you here this late?" Y/n asked, her voice a mix of concern and annoyance.
Kylie pushed past her, not waiting for an invitation. "Close the door. Now," she said, glancing nervously down the hall.
Her voice was unusually serious, missing the lively spark it usually carried.
Y/n obeyed, turning to face both Kylie and Taehyung. The latter had stood up, his posture uncertain, eyes darting between the two women.
"Kylie, what's going on?" Y/n demanded, crossing her arms. The room seemed to tighten around them, anticipation hanging in the air.
Kylie's gaze softened as it landed on Taehyung. "You should sit down too," she said, but there was no kindness in her voice, only tension. "What I'm about to tell you both changes everything."
Taehyung shifted but complied, perching on the edge of the couch. Y/n's eyes narrowed. Whatever Kylie had to say, it wasn't good.
"I didn't want to come here and tell you this, but... you need to know. The firm I work at, we've been investigating a high-profile case involving your families."
Y/n's stomach clenched, and she exchanged a wary glance with Taehyung. "What case?" she asked, her voice low.
Kylie took a deep breath. "It's about your father, Taehyung. And Y/n, it involves your firm as well. There's evidence that points to misconduct; something serious."
Taehyung's eyes widened, and he looked as if he'd just been struck. "My father?" he repeated, voice strained. "What are you talking about?"
Y/n's jaw tensed as she processed Kylie's words. She knew Kylie wouldn't show up in this state without good reason.
But still, the implications were too tangled, too damning to accept at face value. "You're saying there's something big enough to bring into court?"
Kylie nodded, eyes filled with regret. "It's already in motion. There's a witness, and... well, Y/n, they're going to need you to take the case."
Silence crashed down like a wave, pulling them under. Taehyung's face had lost all its color, and he stood abruptly, running a hand through his hair.
"This... this can't be real," he whispered, almost to himself. He paced the small space, every movement restless and full of tension.
Y/n's eyes met Kylie's, searching for anything that would tell her this was a misunderstanding or a prank. But there was no levity in Kylie's face, only worry.
"You're saying my client... my own father's legacy is at risk?" Taehyung's voice trembled with disbelief, his gaze finally locking onto Y/n's.
She stepped toward him, unsure of what to say, the cold exterior she always kept slipping. "Taehyung, we need to look at the facts first. This isn't the place to jump to conclusions."
"But it is the place where everything starts to fall apart," Kylie said softly, looking at them both. "And we don't have much time to decide how we're going to handle it."
The weight of her words settled on their shoulders. Y/n reached out, placing a hand on Taehyung's arm. It was the first time she'd made such a gesture, and it surprised both of them.
"Whatever happens, we'll face it," she said, her voice steady but laced with uncertainty.
Just as the room settled into an uneasy silence, there was another knock on the door.
Y/n's eyes narrowed as she stood up, exchanging a wary glance with Kylie before looking at Taehyung.
"Expecting anyone else?" Kylie whispered, half-joking but tense.
A loud, sudden knock interrupted them again, making them all jump. This time, the voice on the other side was deep, authoritative. "This is the Open up."
Taehyung's eyes widened in panic, while Kylie exchanged a nervous glance with Y/n. The room held its breath, hearts pounding in unison.
"We're here to discuss an urgent matter," the voice continued.
Y/n's hand trembled on Taehyung's arm as they all stood rooted to the spot. The night had just taken a turn none of them could have imagined.
