As they stepped out of the office, Erevin glanced around, trying to figure out which direction to head. His mind was still spinning from the introduction, he struggled to figure out where 11C was.
"uhm.. do you know where our class is?" he asked, trying not to sound completely lost.
"It's on the second floor", Dawn said, a hint of amusement in her voice. "Principal Coyle mentioned it when we were in his office".
Erevin blinked, realizing that he hadn't heard a word of that part of the conversation. He had been too distracted, lost in the warmth of her presence and her smile that moved his heart. Embarrassment crept up his neck.
"oh, right... I must've missed that," he stammered, almost slipping out with, "I was thinking about you", but quickly changed it to, "I mean.. I was thinking about school and everything."
Dawn smiled softly, as if she could sense his awkwardness. "You know, I am a bit nervous too," she admitted, her voice soft. "It's nice to have someone else who's new. It feels good that I am not alone"
Erevin felt a warmth spread through him. "yeah, I guess it helps," he replied, a small smile forming on his face. "I was worried about starting fresh, just glad that you're here."
"Exactly! We'll figure it out." She said returning his smile, her eyes shining with a hint of understanding.
As they climbed the stairs to the second floor, Erevin turned to Dawn, curious about her schedule. "What subjects are you taking?"
Dawn smiled, her enthusiasm shining through. "I'm taking Fine Arts, English, History, Russian and Home Science. What about you?"
Erevin nodded listing off his subjects. "I've got English, History, Fine Arts, Computer Science, Maths and Russian. I have no idea why they only offer Russian as a foreign language.... there are many better options."
Dawn raised an eyebrow, a playful smile forming on her lips. "That's quite the odd mix! Science and Art? How will you manage all of that?"
Erevin shrugged, feeling a spark of passion as he replied. "I believe Science and Art go hand in hand. Science is a way to understand and explain the structure behind the world's beauty, while art is how we express it. They compliment each other --- one shows you how things work, the other lets you feel them."
She tilted her head slightly, clearly intrigued but not entirely convinced. "I get what you mean, but I still think there's something special about just experiencing beauty without needing to break it down. Sometimes it's enough to feel it and express what it makes you feel."
Erevin nodded, "That's a fair point, but I think understanding beauty can deepen appreciation."
Dawn laughed lightly, shaking her head. "You are a smooth talker aren't you? I bet you get a lot of girls with lines like that."
His face flushed slightly, caught off guard by the comment. "Uh, not really... I don't talk to many people."
"Well, you are doing fine so far." She replied with a teasing smile. "Maybe you'll surprise yourself."
As they reach the second floor, Dawn glanced around, checking the room numbers. "11C should be just down the hall." She said pointing ahead. He followed her gaze and nodded, trying to shake off the embarrassment. "Yeah, we should probably head in."
Dawn smiled, stepping forward but pausing as she looked back at him. "I'm glad we got to meet before class. It makes this whole new-school thing feel a little less scary." He smiled back feeling the tension from earlier ease. "Yeah, me too."
As they reach the door to their classroom, he felt the nervousness he'd felt all the morning begin to fade. Dawn's warmth and easy conversations had pulled him out of his anxious thoughts, and now, standing beside her, he felt something he hadn't expected on his first day-- comfort.
And as they stepped into the classroom, Erevin couldn't help but feel that maybe, just maybe, things wont be that bad.
