The bell rang in the distance, it's echo barely reaching Erevin as he stood outside the principal's office, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings of Riverview High. His family had just moved into the town a week ago and now, standing in the hallway of his new school, he felt the weight of it all. The building smelled faintly of fresh paint and books, a mix that somehow put him on edge.

With a deep breath, Erevin pushed the door open. Inside, a tall thin man with graying hair and kind eyes sat behind a desk cluttered with paper and remnants of a rushed breakfast. He looked up and greeted Erevin with a smile.

"Erevin, right?" The principal rose to shake his hand. "Welcome to Riverview High, I am your principal Harrison Coyle. I trust your move went well?"

Erevin swallowed hard, his nerves kicking in. Meeting new people always made him feel like he was going to forget how to speak.

"Yes, sir. Just trying to get used to everything" Erevin replied, forcing a polite smile.

"Well I am sure, you'll fit in quickly." Principal motioned towards the chair.

"I heard your parents are opening a custom sweet shop in town. How is that coming along?"

Erevin blinked, recovering from his nerves. "Um, yes the shop" he managed. "they are still getting things up and running".

"Fantastic!" The principal beamed. "I am sure it will be a hit around here. Make sure you tell them I will stopping by when it opens".

Erevin forced a weak smile, nervously fidgeting with the strap of his bag. He hated this feeling, the pressure to respond, to sound excited about something something he wasn't sure he cared about.

But before he could sink deeper into his own thoughts, the principal extended an envelope towards him, "you will be in class 11C with another student....." he checks his watch, "turns out they are late. Would you like to wait a minute, Erevin?"

Erevin blinked surprised by the request but nodded.."uh, sure".

"Good," the principal said cheerfully. "She should be here any minute."

Moments later the door creaked open and Erevin turned instinctively to look. Time seemed to slow as she stepped in.

She entered the room, slightly out of breath, as if she was running to make up for lost time. "I'm so sorry for being late" her voice soft and apologetic. She moved with a quiet grace, her steps light, purposeful, the sound now barely registering over the beating of his heart. Her long hair tied into a neat bun, with a few strands gently framing her face. There was something about her−− kind posture, gentle gaze −− that immediately caught him off guard.

"Dawn, I presume?" the principal said breaking the silence, "I'm glad you could make it. This is Erevin−−−" Erevin barely heard anything else, he was too lost. Dawn. He repeated her name in his head, the sound of it strung his heart like music.

Dawn turned to Erevin, and in that moment, he could feel his pulse quicken. She smiled, her lips curving gently, as she extended her hand. "Hi, its nice to meet you." he didn't know why but his breath hitched, his palms suddenly sweaty. Her eyes deep and dark, briefly flickered in his direction. He felt like he had forgotten how to exist, his mouth had gone dry.

He had to say something−− anything −− his heart pounded in his chest, he stared at her hand for a second too long then quickly shook it. Her soft hand felt warm and comforting against his cold and clammy hand, like sunlight breaking through a cloudy day. "Nice to meet you too" his voice barely above a whisper.

As she withdrew her hand, Dawn smiled again. "I hope we will get along."

Erevin nodded, his face flushing slightly. "Me too".

The principal, glancing at his watch. "Now that the introductions are done, you two should get to class. Your first class starts in about fifteen minutes". He turned to Erevin, the envelope clutched in his hand. "Erevin, hand that envelope to your class teacher, she will give you both your respective roll numbers".

Erevin nodded, still trying to calm the racing in his chest. Dawn smiled politely at the principal then looked back at Erevin, as if waiting for him to lead the way.

They thanked the principal and he quickly gathered himself, slinging his bag over his shoulder.

"Shall we?" Dawn asked, her voice soft but full of quiet confidence.

Erevin gave a nervous nod and together they stepped out of the office, into the bustling hallways of Riverview High.
