As they walked slowly down the hall, Erevin's stomach gave a faint rumble, and he blinked, suddenly remembering. "Wait... we didn't eat anything."
Dawn chuckled softly, shaking her head. "Well, the rest of today's classes have been canceled because of... well, you know-the chaos in the cafeteria," she explained with a hint of amusement. "So, they're letting us leave early. We can just go home for lunch."
But Erevin shook his head. "But we agreed to share my lunch." He gave her a hopeful look, a faint blush on his cheeks. "in case you forgot."
Dawn hesitated, but his sincerity made her smile. "Alright," she agreed, seeing how much the idea mattered to him. "But you stay here; your bag's up in the classroom, and you're in no condition to go climbing to the second floor and back." She gave him a gentle but firm look.
Erevin gave a small laugh, not protesting as she turned and started down the hallway, her steps quick and steady as she went to fetch his lunchbox.
As Dawn stepped into the classroom, a group of boys glanced her way, their eyes lingering a moment too long. An unsettling feeling settled in her stomach, though she tried to shake it off. She made her way quickly to Erevin's desk, her fingers slipping around his lunchbox. As she turned to leave, one of the boys stepped forward, blocking her path.
"Is that nerd making you do his grunt work?" he taunted, his voice low and mocking.
A chill ran down her spine, but Dawn kept her eyes down, heart pounding as she tried to brush past him without a word. Her silence didn't deter him. Behind her, he called out with a leer, "We can help you if you want... in more ways than one."
Her pulse spiked, and her throat tightened. She didn't dare look back. Clutching the lunchbox, she quickened her steps, focusing on just getting away, her only thought to reach Erevin and leave this place as fast as possible.
When Dawn reached Erevin, who was leaning against a pillar, she was slightly out of breath, her face pale. Her hands clutched his lunchbox tightly, and she forced a small smile, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear as if to steady herself.
"Is... everything okay?" Erevin asked, noticing the tension in her gaze, the way her eyes darted nervously.
She hesitated, her heart still pounding. "Yeah," she replied, her voice just a little too light. "Just... had to rush a bit. Didn't want you waiting."
Erevin watched her for a moment, his brows knitting in concern, but he nodded, letting it go. Together, they made their way to a quiet, shady spot beneath a large oak tree at the edge of the school grounds, away from the noise of passing students.
They sat down, the cool shadows offering a moment of peace. Dawn handed him the lunchbox, her hands relaxing a little as she took a slow breath, trying to shake off the lingering fear.
As they opened the lunch box, Dawn's eyes lit up, captivated by the assortment of sweets, all neatly packed. She let out a delighted gasp. "Wow, Erevin! This is amazing..."
He rubbed the back of his neck, a little embarrassed. "My mom... she kind of thought I'd make a lot of friends, so... here we are."
Dawn smiled warmly. "There can never be too many sweets!" She picked up a piece, ready to take a bite, but Erevin quickly held up a hand.
"To really enjoy every sweet," he said with a small, knowing grin, "you have to start with the least sweet ones and work up to the really sweet ones. Trust me."
Dawn raised an eyebrow, intrigued but amused. "Is that so?"
Erevin nodded, a bit more confident now. "Yep, it's the only way." He picked up a small piece of sweet, holding it carefully to her mouth. "You can eat that one after this one," he said, his voice softer, a hint of something more in his eyes.
Dawn's heart fluttered at the unexpected gesture. She leaned forward, and as she took a bite, her lips brushed his fingers. Lost in the moment, she accidentally bit down on his finger along with the sweet. She quickly pulled back, eyes wide, but Erevin didn't even flinch.
For a second, he couldn't breathe. The slight sting felt almost electric, making his heart race. His mind screamed, Oh my god, please do that again, and he hoped she couldn't see the way his pulse had quickened.
Dawn's cheeks flushed as she quickly apologized, "Oh-I'm so sorry! Are you okay?"
Erevin gave a casual shrug, hiding his thrill beneath a calm expression. "It's nothing," he said, brushing it off as if she hadn't sent sparks through his veins.
She took a moment, savoring the sweetness of the treat with that slight hint of mango. "Mmm, this is so good... I love it," she murmured, caught up in the taste.
"Really?" Erevin replied with a glimmer of curiosity. Without a second thought, he brought the half-eaten piece to his mouth and finished it. "It's fine," he added with a small smile, enjoying it just as much.
Dawn's eyes went wide as her cheeks flamed red, her heart racing at the thought. An indirect kiss! She was caught between embarrassment and a fluttering warmth, stealing quick glances at Erevin, who appeared completely oblivious. He sat there, looking perfectly content, clearly having no idea what had just flustered her so much.
Dawn tried her best to focus on the sweets, but her mind kept drifting. She nibbled each treat absentmindedly, the flavors mingling with the confusing mix of warmth and tension she felt just sitting beside Erevin. She couldn't shake the memory of that shared sweet, or the way he seemed so unbothered by it.
Her wandering thoughts snapped back when she noticed two girls from their class walking toward them. One of them hung back a little, watching with a hint of intrigue, while the other approached them directly. The girl, exuding confidence, addressed Erevin with a bright smile.
"Hi, Erevin," she said, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "I'm Amelia-top of the class last year," she added, glancing briefly at Dawn, her tone laced with subtle arrogance, as if to make her point. Dawn blinked, trying to hide her confusion, wondering why that bit of information was relevant.
"Uh, h-hi," he mumbled, his voice a bit unsure as he fidgeted with the wrapper of a sweet, trying to stay calm. But before Dawn could interrupt, Amelia smiled wider and said, "I was actually wondering if you'd like to go out with me tonight? You know, for a little date."
