As Erevin and Dawn stepped into the classroom, the calm of the hallways gave way to a rush of noise and chaos. The room was filled with chatter, laughter, and an air of arrogance. Most students barely glanced at the two newcomers, too absorbed in their own conversations, but the few who did, quickly looked away with disinterest.
Erevin scanned the room. It wasn't the orderly, focused classroom he had hoped for. Instead, it felt more like a restless jungle.
Some students draped themselves casually in their seats, propping up their feet on desks. Their expensive sneakers and branded clothing stood in stark contrast to their careless posture. Others had an edge to them— the way they sank low in their seats or leaned back, their uniforms were loose, untucked, ties absent or half-tied. A few had tattoos peeking from under their sleeves, and some exchanged knowing glances and smirks, as they eyed them from a far.
Erevin noticed a boy with a designer watch, casually twirling it on his wrist as he cracked a joke that made a group of girls around him burst into laughter. In a corner a girl with bright, dyed hair and multiple piercings sat with a casual expression, tapping her nails on her desk, as if waiting for something to happen.
He heard Dawn's voice beside him, soft and hesitant. "So... you wanna stick together?" she asked, with a mix of nervousness and awe as she glanced around the room. "Totally" he replied, with same shock and disbelief.
They made their way through the classroom, slipping into the desks near the front, side by side. The bell rang, a few students shuffled in their chairs, but for the most part, the room stayed as lively as ever. When the teacher walked in moments later, Erevin and Dawn instinctively stood up to greet her—only to realize that no one else in the class had bothered. A few snickers sounded from the back, making Erevin's face heat with embarrassment.
The teacher, a tall woman with glasses perched low on her nose and a stack of papers under her arm, gave a quick glance at the two of them, before moving to her desk. "Sit down," she said, her voice matter-of-fact, as though she didn't expect much from the class. Clearly used to the rowdy atmosphere, she started sorting through her papers. Erevin awkwardly sat back down, feeling a little foolish. Dawn followed, giving him a small, understanding smile, as if to say, "At least we tried."
"New student?" she asked, her voice firm but not unkind.
"Yes, ma'am," Erevin replied, pulling the introduction letter from his bag. He hesitated for a moment, glancing at Dawn, who caught his eye and without a word, stood up with him. Her presence was reassuring, even though the awkwardness of standing out still lingered.
They walked to the front together, and he handed the letter to the teacher. A few more students glanced their way, the curious stares heavy on his shoulders. The teacher unfolded the letter and quickly read through it. They stood a step behind, watching her expression changing from tired indifference to surprise.
"All right, everyone, settle down," the teacher began, holding up the letter for the class to see. "It seems we have some new students today, and one of them comes with quite the resume."
"First, let me introduce... Erevin Frostell. Age 18." A few students exchanged glances, but the teacher continued, now reading more formally. "Erevin is transferring into the second year of high school from St. Magnus Academy, where he ranked 7th in the country during his secondary examinations."
A hush fell over the room. Some students straightened up, a few eyebrows raised in surprise.
"Erevin had taken a year off before beginning high school to earn diplomas in both robotics and psychology." The teacher's voice carried a hint of admiration. "He's highly skilled in computer science and software development, and is proficient in six languages." Murmurs spread through the classroom. Erevin could feel the intensity of everyone's eyes on him, including Dawn's. Her jaw hung slightly open with awe and curiosity.
