A new Beginning

Mia hadn't expected her to actually come. Her heart skipped a beat when Charlotte took a seat next to her on the bench. The brunette stared straight ahead and took a deep breath.

Mia played nervously with her bracelet. She had actually worked out what she wanted to say to Charlotte, but now that she was next to her. So close but still so far away, her words were missing.

But the silence was now interrupted by Charlotte. "You hurt me in unspeakable ways."

Mia closed her eyes and took a deep breath. " I know..... I'm so sorry... I've ruined everything..."

" You did. The trust I once had for you is gone.........You were my forever person."

The words hit Mia harder than a punch in the stomach. It took her breath away and made her feel sick. "... I'm so sorry..." she mumbled quietly.

Charlotte looked at her now, as Mia sat next to her, huddled a shadow of herself. She realised that she herself had almost completely healed. Mia, on the other hand, still had a long way to go. Charlotte carefully placed her hand on Mia's. "I can't fully forgive you yet... what we had was the best time of my life. But you need to work on yourself before you're ready for a relationship."

" I know... I'm already in therapy...."

Charlotte smiled gently at her. " That's a great start.... I'll wait for you, Mia."

" Wait... What do you mean?"

" You have to walk this path of healing yourself." Charlotte gave Mia's hand a kiss before standing up again. Leaving the redhead behind.

The soft sunlight filled the sky as the morning broke over London. The room slowly filled with the sun's rays. The duvet rustled softly as Charlotte turned on her side and slowly opened her eyes.

The watch on the nightstand read seven o'clock. Charlotte sat up and stretched before getting out of bed.

The morning still had a chill to it, but the coffee in her hand gave her warmth. She looked out over the rooftops of the city as she sat on the windowsill by the kitchen window. The silence brought her peace. Charlotte was happy with her life.

She had imagined her late thirties a little differently. A few years ago, she thought she would grow old with her husband. When that ended, she thought she had found her forever in another person. But life had a different plan. If Charlotte had learnt one thing in the last two years, it was to love herself before loving others.

She glanced at her phone as a message from Sara appeared. The bartender was currently in Spain with her girlfriend. Charlotte smiled slightly. She was happy for Sara.

One last look in the mirror. Simple make-up, hair pinned up. She didn't want to dress too smartly for a company party, even if it was the twentieth anniversary of the nursery. The only thing missing was the jewellery. She took her jewellery box out of the wardrobe and began to rummage through it.

At the bottom of the box, hidden by all the other jewellery, a necklace emerged. Charlotte carefully took it out. Now that she was holding it in her hands again after all this time, she no longer felt the intense pain. No, she now thought of the beautiful memories.

And on the whole, it was now just a piece of silver in the shape of a heart. She left the house as the clock struck exactly eight.

Charlotte stood outside the nursery, rummaging in her bag for her key. When a voice rang out behind her.

"Hello, sweetheart."

She immediately turned around. Mia was standing there, smiling slightly. When Charlotte looked into her eyes, she realised that they were much calmer and more honest than the last time they had seen each other.

"Amelia..."

Charlotte had promised Mia that she would wait for her. Perhaps now was the time to come back to her.
