I got scheduled for a night shift at Sweet Pea's so this better not run all night. Around noon we met up where we had moved the car we picked. Beth in the driver seat, Ruby in passenger, and Annie and I in the backseat. We drive through customs,

"You know, you need to have some fun on your girls' trip, 'cause... you really need to chill." Annie leans forwards and hits a few buttons on the screen to start playing some music.

"Don't hold the wheel like that." Ruby says as she glances over to Beth.

"How am I holding it?"

I lean back in the back seat scrolling through my phone, "Like you already have the drսg up your butt." I giggle.

"You're about to cross the border into Canada." Ruby glances back at me.

"Please have your passports and all necessary documents ready!" A Guard shouts.

"Do they pull you over on the way in?" Beth asks. She's scared, clearly.

"Well, if they do, it's not like we have anything in the car. Duh." Ruby turns and looks forwards again.

"Please get out my face" Annie sings a bit of the song she had put on.

"I brought Stan's gun." Ruby says calmly.

"What?" I shoot up straight.

Beth's eyes widen and she tightens her grip on the steering wheel, "what?" she whisper-shouts.

"Relax. It's in my purse, and it's not loaded." She still doesn't look at us.

"Why would you do that?" My eyes are locked on her.

She shrugs, "I thought it was smart to bring protection. We're committing a crime in a foreign country."

"It's Canada!" I scoff.

"We're not meeting El Chapo in Guatemala here!" Annie's eyes are wide too as she glances between Ruby, Beth, and Me.

I pull my eyes away from Ruby and look at Annie. "El Chapo's actually Mexico."

"Oh, Jesus, whatever" Annie scoffs.

Beth sighs, "What are we doing, you guys? This is so crazy."

"Yeah, it is." Ruby agrees.

"What if we get caught?" Beth asks.

I sat up a bit adjusting my seat belt, "I mean, it's not like we have a choice, right?"

"There's always a choice." Beth glances at me through the rearview mirror.

"And then what?" My eyes hold hers, "What happens when he shows up again? In front of your kids?"

"Dude, it's never gonna end." Ruby says.

"Unless we end it." Beth sighs, "Tell me to turn around." She looks around at all the cars in line, at all the guards. Nobody says anything. Nobody speaks up. We know we have to do this or the man will have our heads.

"Please say it." Beth's voice holds some desperation, but she knows it too, "Please, please someone say it." Still nobody speaks. She doesnt move the car until the cars behind us honk louder. She rolls her window down with a deep breath. She flashes a polite smile at the guard.

"Passports, please." He asks, he doesn't return the smile.

All three of us hand Beth our passports, and she hands them to the guard, "Here you go."

The guard takes a couple minutes looking at the passports and then at all of us, "Have a nice day." he says as he hands the passports back.

"Still think it's drսg?" Beth asks.
