Another day. Another night. Another night full of nightmares and Aki slipping in and out of consciousness.
Aki stood on the deck of an old, weather-worn ship, the wooden boards creaking underfoot with every tilt and roll. The sea around her was alive, angry waves crashing against the hull, sending sprays of saltwater up into the air. Dark storm clouds swirled above, flashes of lightning illuminating the relentless chaos of the ocean. Everything felt vivid, yet strangely distant, like an echo of another world.
As she steadied herself against the ship's railing, she noticed three figures standing at different points on the deck, each one shrouded in an air of mystery. They didn't seem to acknowledge her, each caught in their own space, as if bound to this dreamlike vessel by forces beyond her understanding.
The first figure was a small girl, no more than seven or eight, with large, haunted eyes and a white dress that looked eerily out of place against the violent backdrop of the storm.
The dress was slightly too big on her, its loose sleeves falling over her hands. She stared out over the churning waves, clutching a doll close to her chest, though it was hard to tell if it was for comfort or simply out of habit. She was just a silent, fragile presence on the deck. Aki felt an odd pull toward her, a sense of recognition tinged with a sorrow she couldn't quite place.
As she took a step toward the girl, the ship lurched, and her gaze was drawn to another figure, further down the deck. This one was older, a teenage girl with an elegance that seemed almost unnatural here, like she'd stepped out of a different story altogether. Dressed in sleek black clothes, her expression was unreadable, her dark eyes taking in the storm with a detached calm, as though it were merely a passing inconvenience.
She glanced at Aki, her gaze sharp and assessing, but said nothing. There was an air of secrecy around her, like she knew things Aki couldn't even begin to guess. Something about her felt familiar and safe, yet unnervingly distant.
And then, there was the last figure. She stood near the ship's mast, tall and composed, her presence radiating a strange authority.
Her gaze was clear, piercing through the chaos of the storm and watching Aki with an intensity that felt almost protective, though not warm. Dressed simply yet purposefully, she looked like she belonged nowhere and everywhere, a timeless figure who seemed unbothered by the waves crashing around them. Unlike the others, her eyes held a quiet knowledge, a hint that she understood things Aki couldn't.
Aki hesitated as she looked between them, her mind foggy, yet a question hung there, unspoken.
What was this place?
Who were these people?
And why did they feel... connected to her, in a way she couldn't understand?
Just as she took another step, reaching out instinctively toward the little girl, she felt a tug - a voice calling her name, faint and distant, pulling her back from the ship. The storm faded, the figures blurred, and she felt herself slipping, like she was waking up from a half-remembered dream.
Aki's eyes blinked open, the bright light of her hospital room disorienting her. She sat up slowly, her mind still heavy with remnants of the dream, the salt air and creaking boards haunting her senses. The nurse stepped in, clipboard in one hand and a plate of food in the other, offering a gentle smile.
"How are you feeling today, Aki?"
Aki's gaze wandered, trying to piece together where she was and how she'd gotten here. The world around her felt strangely hollow, as if she were looking at it through frosted glass. The question hung in the air, but her mind struggled to grasp it, her memories a jumbled fog.
