Dasuki State, Nigeria

2023.

Yazid came in with Asma during Maghrib, No-one was at the living room so he brought her to my room and headed for the mosque.

We hugged and exchanged pleasantries, it's been long since we last met each other. I led her to the toilet to perform ablution, we offered our salatul Maghrib, prayed our dua's and then she spoke.

"You used to be my mother's daughter in law and now here i am trying to become your mother's, how life works." She said but you could hear the surrendered tone she used like someone who has given up in life and this is her last hope. "And she doesn't even like me." She added.

I extended my hands to hers and comforted her. "You forgot that you were nice to me when i was in your house, i guess it's time to return to favour don't you think?" I tried to joke hoping to ease the tensed atmosphere.

And she smiled, maybe my words gave her hope and i wish Nini will just accept her and not crash that hope she built and mustered—it'll be a decision she won't regret.

After folding the prayer mats and hijabs we used to pray, she rolled back her veil and we walked to the dining area where Nini, Nabeel and Yazid were already occupying. Yazid's face was brewing with unsureness but i gave him a reassuring smile.

Nini didn't say a word she only stared as we made it to the dining table. Probably, no rephrase that obviously she wasn't expecting Asma to be the said guest we were expecting for Iftar.

"Nini meet Asma'u, our guest for today."I introduced, Nini doesn't know i heard her conversation with Yazid the other day and I'm so taking advantage of that.

"Ina wuni, Good Evening." Asma greeted fidgeting her hands while her gaze was fixated to the ground. She's reluctant, unsure, nervous, anxious believe me i know how it feels.

Nini was hesitant at first but she answered glaring at Yazid, that type of glare that indicated you and I will have to talk later.

"An Sha Ruwa lafiya." Asma offered her Iftar Mubarak.

And Nini replied uninterested trying her best not to seem rude but it sure isn't working. "Why don't you have a sit, Asma." I Intervened offering her a seat close to Yazid.

She reluctantly took a seat, her face brewing with a broken expression. Nini doesn't want her close and she's made that very very obvious. Before this Iftar dinner is over, I'll try my best to make Nini accept her—If that's possible but what does impossible even mean? I don't know it and I don't plan on knowing it throughout this dinner.

"Hi, Asma. Long time, i see you've become skinny just two days into Ramadan that means by the end of Ramadan you'll turn into a stick" Nabeel joked but asma didn't find it funny, her gaze was on her food which she was only poking, she hasn't eaten a morsel yet. I know from the way Nini replied and brushed her off she knows only a miracle now will make Nini accept her.

I took a seat and we digged in, only the sound of cutleries were heard and still Asma wasn't eating anything.

"Why aren't you eating?" Nini beat me to asking. For a second there i thought Nini was being nice or rethinking her decision by warming up to Asma. "Finish your food, let's be done with this iftar so you can go back home."
