The weekend had just begun, and Yun Shik and Kivishan were eagerly planning to spend the day at the park with their dad. They had been talking all week about riding bikes, playing catch, and maybe even having a picnic. But as they sat at the breakfast table that Saturday morning, their dad looked more tired than usual.
"Dad, are you okay?" Yun Shik asked, noticing the way his father was rubbing his temples.
Their dad smiled faintly. "Just a bit tired, Yun Shik," he replied. "I think I'll rest a bit this morning and then we can all go to the park this afternoon."
"Promise, Dad?" Kivishan asked, looking up with bright eyes.
"Promise," he said, reaching over to ruffle Kivishan's hair. "Just let your old man take a quick nap."
The boys nodded, both eager for the afternoon ahead. They spent the morning tidying up their room, trying to be quiet so Dad could rest.
But the afternoon came and went, and Dad still hadn't gotten up. Yun Shik finally crept into his dad's room, feeling a strange worry tugging at his heart. He reached out, shaking his dad's shoulder gently.
"Dad... it's time to go to the park."
There was no response. His dad's face looked peaceful, but he wasn't moving. Yun Shik's heart pounded faster as he shook him harder.
"Dad? Dad!" he called, his voice trembling. "Wake up!"
Kivishan, hearing his brother's raised voice, ran into the room. "What's wrong, hyung?" he asked, eyes wide with fear.
"I... I don't know," Yun Shik whispered, his voice breaking. "I think something's wrong."
He reached for the phone and, hands shaking, called their neighbor, Mr. Lee, who had always been there to help whenever their dad needed a hand. Within minutes, Mr. Lee arrived and checked on their dad. He turned to the boys with a sorrowful expression.
"I'm so sorry, boys," Mr. Lee said gently, his voice barely a whisper. "Your father has passed away."
The world felt like it had stopped. Yun Shik could barely process the words. How could this be real? He was supposed to be there, guiding them, protecting them.
Kivishan clung to Yun Shik, sobbing. "Why, hyung? Why won't he wake up?"
Yun Shik held his little brother tightly, his own tears streaming down his face. "I don't know, Kivishan... I don't know."
The next few days were a blur. Relatives came to help, neighbors brought food, and friends came to pay their respects. Yun Shik felt as if he was watching it all happen from somewhere far away. He stayed strong for Kivishan, but inside, he felt an emptiness he didn't know how to fill.
At the funeral, Yun Shik held Kivishan's hand tightly as they stood by their father's resting place. He felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. He was no longer just a big brother; he was now the closest thing Kivishan had to a parent.
After the service, Yun Shik and Kivishan sat quietly on the front steps of their home, feeling the silence settle around them. Kivishan's small voice broke the quiet.
"Hyung... who's going to take care of us now?"
Yun Shik swallowed hard, fighting back tears as he wrapped an arm around his brother. "I will, Kivishan," he whispered. "I'll take care of you. I promise."
Kivishan looked up, his tear-filled eyes searching Yun Shik's face. "But... I'm scared, hyung."
Yun Shik took a shaky breath. "I'm scared too," he admitted. "But we'll get through this together. I'll be here, no matter what."
The days that followed were difficult. Every morning, Yun Shik would get Kivishan ready for school, pack his lunch, and make sure he had everything he needed. He would help him with his homework, make simple meals, and, when Kivishan had nightmares, he would stay by his side, whispering that everything would be okay.
One evening, Yun Shik found Kivishan looking at an old family photo. His eyes were red, and he looked up at Yun Shik with a sad smile.
"Do you think Dad would be proud of us?" Kivishan asked softly.
Yun Shik placed a hand on his brother's shoulder. "I know he would," he said, his voice steady. "Dad taught us to take care of each other, and that's what we're going to do."
Kivishan nodded, sniffling. "I'll try to be strong, hyung. Just like you."
"We'll both be strong," Yun Shik said, hugging him. "For Dad, and for each other."
Over time, Yun Shik and Kivishan adjusted to their new life. They became closer, supporting each other in ways they hadn't before. Yun Shik took on responsibilities he hadn't imagined, but he did it with a determination to honor his father's memory. Every day, he reminded himself of the promise he'd made—to always be there for Kivishan.
The pain of losing their father never truly went away, but in each other, they found the strength to move forward. Together, they learned that family wasn't just about who was there to guide them—it was about the love and support they shared. And even though their dad was gone, his lessons lived on in their hearts.
In the quiet moments, Yun Shik would close his eyes, whispering a silent promise to his father: "Don't worry, Dad. I'll take care of Kivishan. We'll be okay."
And with that, he knew they would be.......
