💞💞💞💞

The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to Taehyung's throat, a constant reminder of where he was and of the reality he couldn't escape. He hurried down the stark white hallway, his shoes squeaking against the linoleum floor, a jarring counterpoint to the hushed whispers echoing from behind closed doors.

"Excuse me," he mumbled as he accidentally bumped into a nurse pushing a medication cart. "I'm so sorry."

The nurse offered a kind smile. "It's alright, dear. You must be here for Mr. Jeon?"

Taehyung nodded, his throat tightening. "Yes, how is he?"

"He's resting now," the nurse replied gently. "He had a rough night."

Taehyung's heart sank. He knew what that meant. He thanked the nurse and continued his trek, each step heavier than the last.

He found Jeongguk propped up against the pillows, his eyes closed, his breathing shallow. The sight of him, so frail and vulnerable, sent a fresh wave of grief washing over Taehyung.

He pulled up a chair and gently took Jeongguk's hand, his thumb tracing circles on the back of it.

"Hey, sleepyhead," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Did you have a good dream?"

Jeongguk's eyes fluttered open, a weak smile gracing his lips. "I dreamt we were back in Busan," he murmured, his voice raspy. "Eating those spicy tteokbokki that made you cry."

Taehyung chuckled, a bittersweet sound that echoed in the quiet room."You were the one who cried! You said your mouth was on fire."

"Did I?" Jeongguk asked, his brow furrowed in mock confusion. "Must have been the fever talking." He coughed, a dry, hacking sound that tore at Taehyung's heart.

"Don't strain yourself," Taehyung said, gently smoothing back Jeongguk's hair. "We can go back to Busan when you're better. We'll eat all the street food, and I'll buy you that silly hat you wanted."

Jeongguk squeezed his hand weakly. "Tae," he said, his voice serious, "stop making promises you can't keep."

Taehyung's breath hitched. "I can keep them," he insisted, his voice cracking. "We just need a little more time."

"Time," Jeongguk echoed, his gaze drifting towards the window. "It's the one thing we don't have." He turned back to Taehyung, his eyes filled with a profound sadness. "Don't waste yours on me, Tae.

Go out, explore the world, fall in love again."

"No," Taehyung choked out, tears filling his eyes. "I don't want to love anyone else. I only want you."

"And I only want you to be happy," Jeongguk replied, barely a whisper. "Promise me you'll try, Tae. For me."

Taehyung looked at Jeongguk, his heart shattering into a million pieces. He knew Jeongguk was right, but the thought of living without him, of loving someone else, was unbearable. He nodded slowly, tears streaming down his face. "I promise."

The next morning, the sun rose, casting a golden glow across the room, but the warmth couldn't reach Taehyung. He sat beside Jeongguk's bed, his hand clasped tightly around Jeongguk's, which was now cold and lifeless.

"I love you, Guk," he whispered, his voice broken. "And I'll never forget you."

He stayed there for hours, lost in memories until a nurse gently reminded him that it was time to let go. He kissed Jeongguk's forehead one last time, a silent goodbye, and left behind the only man he had ever loved.

He wandered through their garden, the one filled with laughter and whispered secrets, the one where they had carved their initials into the bark of their favorite tree, a symbol of their eternal bond. The inscription was still there, a testament to a love transcending life and death.

"Forever entwined," he whispered, his voice carried away by the wind. He would keep his promise; he would live, and he would love again. But Jeongguk, his first love, his forever love, would always be with him, a part of him, forever entwined in his heart.
