Avery and Max had agreed to meet at a restaurant in Manhattan. She was so nervous. This was her first date in four years. She went into the living room.
"Hi mommy." Dylan said.
"Hi."
"You look pretty."
"Thank you."
"Are you going out?"
"I'm going to dinner with a friend."
"Do I know her?"
"No."
Avery showed up to the restaurant first and was shown to the table. Max showed up about thirty seconds later.
"Hi." She said.
"Hi." He sat down. "You look beautiful."
"Thank you." "You look nice to."
"Thanks."
"Got a hot date after me?" She said jokingly.
"About three."
They were eating and talking.
"How long have you been a dancer?" He asked.
"Five years."
"Do you like it?"
"I absolutely hate it."
"Why do you do it?"
"The diner didn't pay what I needed, that does." "Neither job is what I want to do."
"What do you want to do?"
"I want to open my own restaurant." "I'll never get to though."
"Why?"
"I can't afford it, even trying to save money." "I love cooking." "I went to culinary school for a little while." "I dropped out."
"How come?"
"I starting seeing the man teaching the courses, and I got pregnant." "After I got pregnant, I found out that the man I was seeing was married, with five children." "When I told him I was pregnant he said it wasn't his."
"Did you keep it?"
"Yes I have a son."
"What's his name?"
"Dylan."
"Do you have a picture?" She took out her phone and showed him. "Aw." "How old?"
"Six." "I want to get him out of Queens." "Into a better neighborhood, a better school system." "If I have to dance until I'm fifty to do that, I will." "Enough about me." "What about you?"
Max walked Avery to her car after dinner.
"Did you have fun?" He asked.
"Yes."
"Can I see you again?"
"Really?" "Even knowing I have a son?"
"Yes."
"Sure."
"Can I have a kiss?"
"Yeah." They kissed slowly for about thirty seconds. They both smiled when it broke. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight." Avery got in her car and drove away. They were both very happy.
