Alyssa sat at her desk, trying to lose herself in the endless data on her screen, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the previous night. She had hoped, desperately, that today would be the start of her moving on from everything she'd learned about Luke—no, Lucifer. The encounter had left her shaken, and all she wanted was distance, a chance to clear her head.
But just as she began to settle into her work, she noticed a stir by the office door. Glancing up, she was startled to see Lucifer walking through, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on her. A slow, knowing smile tugged at his lips, and without hesitation, he gave her a slight nod before continuing on to the back room where the tech department was.
Alyssa's heart raced, her stomach knotting as she quickly looked away, pretending not to notice. She had hoped he'd stay away, that he would give her space after what had happened, but here he was, acting as if nothing had changed. She forced herself to breathe, gripping the edge of her desk as she tried to regain her composure. She couldn't let him see how rattled she was.
As she struggled to focus, she noticed another presence nearby—Remial, watching the scene unfold from his desk across the room. His gaze was sharp, his expression a mixture of suspicion and wariness as he tracked Lucifer's every move. Even from her distance, Alyssa could feel Remial's intensity, the silent vigilance he held as he observed his brother's unexpected arrival.
Remial's attention shifted briefly to her, his expression softening with concern before his focus returned to Lucifer's figure disappearing into the back room. Alyssa knew what he must be thinking—Lucifer's arrival wasn't a simple visit, and there had to be a purpose behind his every step. Remial would be wondering what Lucifer was planning, why he would return so soon after Alyssa had confronted him.
She forced herself to return to her work, yet every nerve felt attuned to the tension simmering beneath the surface. She couldn't help but glance back in the direction of the tech department, half-expecting Lucifer to reappear at any moment. A part of her wished she could confront him again, demand to know why he was here, but she reminded herself that nothing good would come of another public scene.
Moments later, Remial approached her desk, his footsteps soft, his voice low and gentle.
"Are you alright?" he asked, concern evident in his tone.
Alyssa managed a quick nod, not trusting herself to say much. She wanted to confide in him, to let him know the fear and confusion swirling inside her, but she knew better. If she shared too much, it would only intensify the tension between him and Lucifer, and that was something she wasn't ready to handle.
"Yes," she whispered, forcing a small smile. "I'm fine. Just... trying to focus."
Remial seemed unconvinced, his eyes searching hers. "If you need anything, just let me know," he murmured. His gaze flicked toward the tech department door, a hint of distrust flashing in his expression. "I'll be nearby."
She couldn't shake the feeling that whatever Lucifer was planning, it wouldn't end here. And as much as she tried to push her thoughts aside, she knew this was only the beginning of the storm.
