All day, Alyssa did her best to ignore Lucifer's presence. She knew he was somewhere in the building, working in the tech department, but his presence unsettled her. Every now and then, she'd catch herself glancing over her shoulder, half-expecting to see him appear.
She tried to bury herself in her work, hoping that focusing on her tasks would keep her thoughts at bay. But memories of their time together crept in—the warmth of his laughter, the way he listened to her, the moments that had made her feel connected to him. She had trusted him, shared pieces of herself she rarely shared with anyone, and believed he'd done the same.
Before discovering the truth, he'd seemed like someone she could rely on, someone who brought a spark of excitement into her life. Now, the truth had shattered that image, and she was left wondering if those moments had meant anything to him at all.
As the day drew to an end, Alyssa gathered her things, hoping to slip out quietly. But as she neared the exit, her heart sank. There he was, leaning casually against the doorframe, waiting. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes held that same intensity, both inviting and unsettling.
"Alyssa," he said, his voice smooth. "Can we talk?"
She hesitated, instinct urging her to walk away. But curiosity and lingering questions kept her rooted in place. She glanced around, then finally nodded.
"Alright," she said softly.
Without another word, he led her outside, turning down a quieter street nearby, away from the office. She followed him in silence, a mix of anger and questions stirring within her, until he finally stopped, facing her.
"What do you want, Luke?" she asked, forcing herself to look him in the eye.
He gave a faint smile, almost as if her question amused him. "So we're back to 'Luke,' are we?"
Alyssa felt a flash of irritation. "That's the only name I know you by," she replied sharply. "I don't know who you really are. Maybe I never did."
A darker look flickered in his eyes, but he remained composed. "Fair enough," he said quietly. "But I never set out to deceive you. I wanted you to see a side of me that... that I don't show to anyone else."
She shook her head, scoffing. "And what was the point of that? To make me think you were someone you're not?"
He hesitated, his gaze thoughtful. "Maybe at first, I was seeing if I could gain your trust. But somewhere along the line..." He paused, and for a moment, she thought she saw a glimmer of vulnerability. "Somewhere along the line, you became more than that."
Alyssa's anger faltered, though she tried to hold on to it. She'd wanted to see him as nothing more than a liar, a manipulator, but there was something in his expression she couldn't ignore. He wasn't the person she thought he was, but he didn't seem like the monster she'd imagined either.
"But you still lied," she whispered, her voice softening. "You made me believe you were someone I could trust, someone who understood me."
"I did understand you," he said, his voice low. "I still do."
They stood in silence, an unresolved tension lingering between them. Alyssa's mind raced, torn between memories of who she thought he was and the reality before her.
Finally, she spoke, her voice quiet but resolute. "If you want me to understand, then stop hiding. Show me who you are—no more games."
Lucifer's gaze held hers, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Very well," he murmured. "But be careful what you ask for, Alyssa. The truth can change everything."
