For the first time in years, Riley felt vulnerable—and strangely, she didn’t mind it. She’d always been the one to take charge, to keep others at a distance, but with Jax, things were different. She couldn’t hide behind her usual bravado or keep herself walled off. And he had the uncanny ability to see right through her.
In the days that followed, their relationship began to grow in quiet, unexpected ways. Riley and Jax found themselves spending almost every free moment together, but not every day was easy. Beneath the surface, Riley still felt a fear she hadn’t admitted to herself—a fear of being open, of letting someone in completely.
One Saturday, Riley took Jax to one of her favorite spots, an abandoned rooftop garden in the heart of the city. Overgrown with ivy and wildflowers, it was her own secret escape, and she had never shared it with anyone. They sat side by side on an old bench, looking out at the skyline.
Jax looked around, a soft smile on his lips. "This place… it’s beautiful. I can’t believe you found it."
She shrugged, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "I come here when I need to clear my head."
Jax studied her for a moment, sensing the tension in her voice. "What’s on your mind, Riley?"
She hesitated, looking down. This was exactly what she’d been avoiding. She’d never been one to talk about her feelings, to let anyone see her doubts or fears. But the way Jax looked at her made her want to try.
After a long pause, she finally spoke. "It’s just… I’ve never really done this. The whole... real thing." Her voice softened, almost a whisper. "I’ve always pushed people away. It was easier, you know? No one could hurt me if I didn’t let them get close."
Jax’s expression softened, and he reached out, gently taking her hand. "Riley, I know it’s not easy to let someone in. And trust me, I get it. But you don’t have to be perfect. I don’t expect that from you."
She looked at him, her defenses slipping as she met his gaze. "I’m afraid, Jax. Afraid that if I let you in, I’ll mess this up. That… that I’ll end up hurting you."
He squeezed her hand, his voice steady. "Riley, everyone has baggage. I’m not looking for someone perfect; I’m looking for someone real. And that’s what I want with you."
Riley felt a wave of relief wash over her, his words calming the doubts that had been gnawing at her. She leaned in, resting her head on his shoulder, letting herself relax in his presence.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, they sat in comfortable silence, the cool evening air wrapping around them. For the first time, Riley felt a deep sense of peace, like she didn’t have to be anyone but herself. She didn’t have to impress or guard herself—she could just be Riley.
But as they left the rooftop that evening, holding hands and laughing over shared stories, Riley couldn’t shake the feeling that things were about to get even more complicated. The deeper she fell, the more she realized what was at stake.
A few days later, she was on her way to meet Jax when she ran into her best friend, Claire, who had always known her as the playgirl who never settled down. Claire noticed the shift in Riley’s demeanor immediately, smirking as she leaned against the wall. "So, spill. What’s going on with you? You’ve been different."
Riley blushed, feeling a bit self-conscious. "I… I met someone."
Claire’s eyes widened, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "Wait, are you saying someone actually got through to the great Riley? Who is he?"
Riley laughed, the thought of Jax bringing a warm smile to her face. "His name is Jax. And he’s… different. I don’t know how to explain it, but he sees me in a way no one else has."
Claire’s teasing expression softened, genuine curiosity in her eyes. "So, it’s real, huh?"
Riley nodded, her heart pounding as she spoke. "Yeah. For the first time, I think it is."
As she walked away from Claire, her mind was filled with thoughts of Jax. She realized that whatever fears or doubts she’d had, she was ready to face them. Because Jax was worth it.
That evening, when she finally saw him, she couldn’t hold back. She pulled him into a tight embrace, her heart racing as she whispered, "I’m all in, Jax. I’m not holding back anymore."
He looked at her, surprise and affection in his eyes. Then he wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. "Me too, Riley. Me too."
And as they stood there, lost in each other’s arms, Riley knew she was exactly where she was meant to be.
